I know there's loads on this, but been searching, and searching via google - and still not found what I need so wondering if anyone knew the answer.
I've currently a k1(I think) gsxr 1000 shock in my sv650s, I want to swap it for something suited to a 12 stone rider*... is there a straight swap I can do? * I'm assuming it's not suited to a 12 stone rider as it was harsh, now i've lost a bit of weight it's harsh as ****

according to the racetech calculator (take with a pinch of salt) the standard spring is ideal for your weight in fact they say its a bit soft.
what the problem might be is that the oil is getting a bit old and the valving is grotted up. you may also have the spring wound up to much or not enough so the damper is not sitting at the correct part of the stroke. also having lost weight you will need to adjust the valving again. when was the last time you checked the 'ride hight'? as a rule i always err on the softer side for on the road. i have also found on my bike if the rear susspension is too soft the bike will 'weave and wallow' in straight lines, too hard and it skips and jumps about with a 'loose vague' feeling to the rear. get it in the ball park and it instantly feels planted then it's just a case of fine tweaking. |

tbh bibs I've not reset the suspension for along time, when I first got the bike it was a tad harsh (needing a wee every 30 miles) and the old owner (massive member of the site

only way your going to now if the spring is the right weight is to set the sag. cant remember off hand what the sizes are but 10mm bike and 25mm rider springs to mind. if the bike falls within the sizes then the spring is right. if you fall short of the rider sag when you have got the bike sag then the spring is to heavy.
TBH though its more likely to be your comp and rebound settings. if you have wound them up to much then the shock will not move giving a harsh ride. it's about £70-100 to get a shock serviced and in my opinion would be worth it as you then have a nice fresh shock instead of getting another one that you don't know the history of. if you need a different spring they would probably do one for around another £20-30 while they are at it. might also be worth asking about replacing the shim stack for something a bit more compliant. |
