Default The Truth About Sport Products

Did anyone watch, just started watching it now on my Sky plus.

Its pretty interesting, so far its clear that sports drinks don't really produce a benfit unless your endurance training. Pretty much when I do training ride say about 40-45 miles I generally munch a cake or jelly babies then coke or hot chocolate depending on the outdoor temp, then refill my water bottle. I guess sugar water would be useful, I think we worked out that on ride like that we probally burn about 3000-3500k, so you have eat becasue glycogen stores are about 2000k this all a rough estimate clearly as depends on how fit your are ect!

I have dumped fruit juice as my breafast drink in favour of water, way too much sugar in it, not good if you want to lose weight.

Loved the bit where they interviewed the footballing kids who had fallen for the shiny adverts. Not much different to Capri Sun pretending to be a "healthy fruit juice". The olympic cyclist letting us in on his secret of jam sandwiches was also very telling.

Loved the South African guy who could not keep a straight face when asked about sugar-free sport drinks.

Jam Butties will be repackaged as "Mega pro ion max plus" or something similar and put in a fancy box!

Didn't take a rocket scientist to work that one out.... Riding a bike I burn around 700-900 calories an hour (I'm a fat git, so have to work harder than most...) So I'm OK for a 3 hour ride. So if the ride is over 3 hours I'll take an energy drink and take it from the off to put the energy into my body before I start to run low on glycogen stores... Also take food for longer rides. I run out of energy at around 5000 calories consumed unless I eat a lot. Running about in football or rugby will not burn that level of energy, you are not working for long enough.

For shorter rides I use an electrolyte only drink to replace the minerals I sweat out (see fat git comment), because for all sport you need to be well hydrated - it doesn't have to be a sports drink, water is fine.

Graham Obree used to train on Marmalade Sandwiches, similar reason I would suspect.

Lucozade tastes amazing. I don't drink it expecting to become an athlete

To be an athlete you need to eat subways

Some of the England cricketers have jam sandwiches and jelly beans. Stuart Broad took 11 wickets in the last Test at Lord's and he'd been eating my triple chocolate fudge cake which I made for him specially. 300g of chocolate and half a pint of double cream just in the icing, before you count all the butter and sugar in the cake itself!

It was the man himself.

So pretty much apart from hard work, pain and eating well there is no off the shelf solution to getting fit. There really is no good reason to be over weight either, by that I don't mean BMI it pretty easy to know if your fat just look down. Another thing is its not just the fat thats on the outside, it whats deep inside your body that casue the damage.
