clutch adjustmant.. an easy job?

not an SV, but could equally be found on one.

Now I've been over most of the major stuff on the bike since getting it, so shouldn't have any big surprises there, but the little stuff you just never know....

anyway, the clutch span was a little close, so I attempted to adjust it from the bar end whilst I was out the other day, simple enough, but alas the knurled end rotated about 3/4 of a turn and then wouldn't go any further, it looked a bit chewed up under the rubber boot, so on my travels I grabbed another to replace it, I got around to doing that today.

released the cable from the engine end, unthreaded the cable at the bar, the screw thread turned easily and yet the thing wasn't undoing.....on closer inspection the thread was kinked (these are generally of brass/chrome construction so not the strongest things),someone in the passed had tried what I did but used considerable effort, some tapping and twisting later it still wasn't moving, so a bit more drastic action was called for break the knob off the end and collapse the thread part (it has the groove so not that hard to do) and remove the bits, srcew the replacement in, sweet all working fine, and yet I'm perplexed how the thing got stuck in the first place?

I put all the bits back together and sure enough the adjuster only turns 3/4 of a rotation and locks up, on investigation the actual cable doesn't run true to the centre of the adjuster, measured the fulcrum of the lever to the inside shoulder of the nipple carrier recess and it's about 3mm longer than it needs to be, so the cause has been the wrong lever was fitted at some time, drilled the inside edge of the recess a couple of mm closer to the fulcrum and all's sweet.

just shows the simplest of things can catch you out.
