Many years ago there was a device where you hung a bucket of water/earth on a spool and it came down charging a battery to power a transistor radio. Used in Africa etc.
An 'inventor' reinvented this as the wind up radio and tried to sell it in a country where batteries and power are abundant.
He later went on the invent the shoe powered phone charger.
Reminds me of K-Tel in the 70's
