Default Stiff Ignition Barrel

It seems every time I want to start my bike now I have to almost fight with the key to turn it on, apart from spraying WD40 down the barrel. Any thoughts? much appreciated Kieren.

Engine oil is better than WD 40 and if the barrel is worn you can usualy develope a knack for which way to push the key to make it turn easily.

Seen somewhere that using ground up pencil lead is good for this sort of thing

whilst you've failed to say what model your bike is or how this problem came about/ long you've had it, I'd hazard a guess it's probably the standard ware on the ignition lock, clearly this primarily effects the curvy (99-k2); I have also seen it on the first of the pointys.

If you slot the key in the lock, then push it forwards, then turn it, you find you don't have to fight it.

I have a similar issue on my k8 650s. The knack involves moving the key in a clockwise 'O' while taking the steering lock off or turning the ignition on. Not ideal but it works everytime.

I had the same problem with my '99 Curvy. Fixed it by putting some graphite powder down the barrel and then pushing the key in and out a few times. Problem went away after the first ride after that. (Vibrations probably helped the powder spread about inside the barrel)

My old barrel used to require a forwards push. Changed all my locks sorted it. Wish I'd have known about graphite powder

I have the same thing on my K6. Usually the push forward works and something shouting F***ING THING helps.

As everyone has said, most bikes have a trick. My Gixxer is key in, push down and pull towards me. Works every time, nice and smooth, but is a ******* without doing that.

Also if you have anything other than the key by itself on the keyring (other keys perhaps!) take them off now. That added weight is damaging your ignition barrel as it flaps around.
