I've moved into a house with quite a big loft. The loft is boarded with the loose wool insulation underneath the boards. I have no idea when the insulation was installed nor when the boards were installed but I suspect > 10 years ago.
It's an old house (192 ![]() I don't really want to take up all the boards as I'd then need to replace them so I'm considering laying (and fixing) some quilt insulation like this on top of the boards. Does anyone know if its any good? I assume I'd be able to put boxes etc on top of it if necessary? Any other comments or suggestions? Many thanks |

Same your money that stuff is a complete waste of money.
Donut properly, lift boards, lay proper wool insulation, lay boards back down. Job done. |

I was in a similar position earlier this year but I went mad and ripped them all up and laid 18 inches of insulation across the whole floor from wickes and used loft legs to raise the section of floor I wanted to keep above the insulation - was a pain to do but worth it

Well done for increasing the hight, most diy'ers just squash it which reduces the insulation capacity.
The legs are a quick cheap way to increase the void ![]() But only for storage not for real load bearing etc |

Ok, thanks guys.
270mm seems to be banded around as the right amount - is that the reason you installed the legs (I'm guessing I have about 100mm below loft boards right now)? I do have a dream of converting the loft at some point so ideally I wouldn't want to reduce the amount of space. Almost certainly the boards would need to be replaced as they don't look in great condition. Guess I should bite the bullet tho. |

Might as well fit foil backed rigid foam between the joists, this stuff is very efficient for its thickness. Btw, be careful about fitting the foil over wooden flooring, that's a rotter waiting to happen. |

Yup had to be done properly - it's okay to crawl across but as I have a shallow pitch roof I wasn't going to be walking on it anyway

You'll be lucky to have 50mm
![]() If your converting why not do the floor properly now save having to do it twice. |

Fair point. I'll get a few quotes for it.
Thanks all |

Does it actually make that much difference having a foot of insulation in your loftspace?
We're not exactly living in the icelandic wastelands of Antarctica are we ? |
