Hey folks.
First post - hope ye can help. I'm in Ireland and bought a factory restricted SV 650 '05 model about 4 months ago. I have my full licence barely a year at this stage and the law over here requires that for my first 2 years on the full licence I should stay on a fairly small bike, or a restricted big bike. I'm a big guy so I went with the restricted big bike option. NOW...I know there are various ways of restricting bikes. I can't seem to get a definite answer on this. Does anyone know how difficult / easy it will be to de-restrict the bike - when I'm legally entitled to, of course!! I reckon myself it may just be a throttle restricion - nothing ECU related but I'm not a mechanic. Cheers guys. |

Welcome!
Sorry, you're gonna have to shell out for a full power ECU (when the time comes, eh! ![]() |

do you actualy meen dealer restricted, never herd of an sv coming from the factory restricted.
Did you have to pay for it to be restricted? If so then the dealer should have the original ECU for you and its your dont let him fob you off with "i have to hold onto it", think what could happen if he goes bust or you forget.

It came factory restricted. Or so they tell me anyway. I saw it before it came out of the box in the shop. They sold it to me as a factory restricted bike, and therefore it was a lower insurance class.
Spoke to guy in the dealership today and he had a look and said it's just a throttle restriction alright. Like I said, I'm no mechanic. Think I'm gonna bring it to a different shop and see what they say to me. |

Yeah its an ecu restriction i imagine marky....my k5 is factory restricted...ecu job.
It has to be for our 2 insurance companies to recognise it.....possibly in the semantics of it all its actually the dealer who remaps or swaps the ecu......im not sure, but i do know my bike hadn't been a "factory restricted" job until i asked for it to be......then im sure the ecu was remapped and the bike registered as a factory restricted model, because i didnt pay extra for it. Had I to pay the usual 500euro extra i would have expected the second ecu. On a fuel injected bike a factory restriction most usually involves an ecu map, and on a carbed bike its a washer or drilled plate or similar in the intake and/or exhaust.. Where did you get it, Priory? Meskalls? |

There must be quite a few people who buy full power 2nd hand SV's and want to restrict them - that's what I did for my son.
Why not wait until the 2 years is up (I know you want to be totally legal ![]() Cheers Keith |

Keith - as for wating the 2 years, it'd be tough!! You know yourself. I want it at full power and then I want to put a Rene Twin Hi Titanium exhaust system on it.....it's hard to imagine having it restricted for another year!! Although........I am moving to Dublin in January. Majority of it's use will be whizzing to college and stuff through Dublin so, in fairness, I'd probably manage with it still being restricted........ |

I promise not to tell if you do de-restrict it.

Personally, I wouldn't de-restrict it - but thats me
![]() If you are unfortunate enough to come off & the insurance get your bike & find out the bike is full power, they'll laugh at you when it comes to payput time ![]() Just a thought ![]() |

maye i cant read but is it a new (pointy) or an older(curvy) sv? if its a pointy one then u just need to swap the ecu to the derestricted one which you should have got with the bike. if its a curvy one then i aint got a bloody clue. its still a bike restricted or not and most importantly an sv
