happy new year to everyone.
today I started cleaning the brakes and I've went and pushed the pistons out too far and knakered the seals. it turns out they were gubbed anyway as there was loads of salts and much under the seals. so I bled the system and took out the pistons, all nice and cleaned up now. question is, can I buy new rings and fit them myself? or is this a definate garage job? how much do you recon for 2 new seals to fit myself and how much for a garage to do it? what's a good price? I also have the problem of not being able to ride the bike to a garage nd I don't have a van! good start to the new year!! |

You can do it yourself. All you have to do is the same thing, pop the pistons out and put the new seals in the put the pistons back in and push them back and fill up again.
Just make sure you have enough brake fluid and drain it all out because you might contaminate the stuff that is there.

that simple? nice one.
you don't happen to know the cost of new seals do you? and is it worth doing both sides of the bike just to be safe? thanks. |

Make sure you use lots of rubber grease on the seals to keep them working properly.
I think the seals come to around 35 quid or so for the front callipers. Alternatively I have a set of callipers for sale for 45 quid ![]() |

I paid around £24 for both calipers....for that you get two dust seals and two piston seals !! Its a killer I know.
Anyone know if the dust seals are vital ?? I noticed there wasn't one on the rear piston when I changed pads a couple of weeks ago. Sorry for my ignorance........ |

The outer seal is not critical. It is there just to stop the crap getting to the fluid seal. It is obviously a better idea to have the dust seals in place to stop said crap getting to the important seal. However, they are not critical to the operation of the brakes themselves.
I am at the moment riding with only one dust seal in. As soon as I have been delivered the rubber grease I will put the dust seals back in. The rubber grease IS critical and you should not try to replace the seals unless you get this grease. Further more, you should not use anything else (grease) as a substitute. All other types of grease will deteriorate the rubber rings and it wont be long before you have brake fluid spilling all over the pads and disks. Rubber grease is not easily available. For example I tried to get some today at my local Halfords and the poor sales chappy thought I was trying to wind him up. They don't stock or sell it. But there are places that you can buy it on line. Do a search for Red Rubber Grease. The job in it's self is a simple one. |
