Like most of the 650s owners who use this site they probably find that when they have a pillion on the back the bike is, in few words Pants ! im about 9 stone and my mrs is about 8 stone, it just doesnt shift at all,

so here is the question to the wealth of know how on this site. . .
  • how would i correct this problem?
  • what parts would i need?
i have really thought about buying a new bike. . . but stuff that i worked damm hard for the SV so its staying with me and being upgraded untill it cannot be upgraded anymore. . . eventualy

Take your rear pre-load up a notch. It helps wonders.

Some folks advise a few extra psi in the rear tyre too. I don't bother with that though.

Also, allow yourself more time for everything, the bike will be sluggish carrying more weight.

EDIT: I'm around 11 stone, and have had no problems with my 15 stone mate on the back. I just accept the fact that the bike will pull differently.

What do you mean by 'it doesn't shift at all'? Not enough power?

Blimey, im you and your missus weight combined!

As said, up the preload and be prepared that the bike will handle dirrerently. If you are not happy, then uprate the rear shock

Taking the rear preload up will help with the handling if you keep bottoming out at the back. A smaller front sprocket will alter the gear ratios to make the bike acellerate harder but rev higher for a given speed & gear, possibly robbing you of outright top speed.

As mentioned you've just doubled the weight the bike's carrying, it will accellerate slower, take longer to stop and not be as quick to turn, physics is fairly keen on this.

Edit: Keep an eye on the revs, too high or too low doesn't get the best from the motor and this will be more apparent with a pillion.

i dont mind adding some ££'s to get it done so its not sluggish any more, maybe im just dreaming. . . i just want my sv to be the bees knees at everything and i dont mind spending the money on it.

I've taken pillions loads of times on the SV, its fine. Learn to ride it better and exploit what you have. Ride it smooth and short shift like somebody else has already mentioned and keep it the power band, dont rev the nuts out of it and dont let the drop down to low either.

Look further down the road at whats coming towards you and then you'll have more time to prepare for it.

If your planning on doing alot of two up work, then sorry but buy another bike, something like a VFR or a Triumph Sprint ST is going to be more suitable.

Failing that buy your misses her own bike, its much more fun that way.

With respect it will never be that. Just accept it for what it is. Rather than chuking a load of money at it, that you'll never get back. Unless you just like tinkering that is.

it'll still be fine for 120mph+ cruising. I had a pillion on all weekend. Not having one was the best performance 'upgrade' i've ever had! was like having a new bike

Gear it down, that will provided a bit of added acceleration. Reduce one tooth on the front or add three on the rear (not both....)

(and I think that's the right way round!)
