When you see the state of the oil thats in there, you'll want to change it especially if its been in there along time. It'll be a nice mix of water and oil and it will stink...

Get it changed.

Tip : crack the damper bolt in the bottom of the forks, before you unscrew the fork caps. It keeps the pressure on the spring and stops it all spining around which it will do or I found it did with no pressure on the fork.

Agreed with Fizz on the smell.

However you only need to undo the bolts inside the lower legs if you want to clean or modify the damper thingy. Not neccessary for straight spring change.

The oil that came out of my forks was absolutely rancid. The garage stunk of it for a good few days afterwards... :)

Haynes instructions are pretty spot on, and yes you have to take the whole fork leg apart.

No you need to take them out and tip them upside down.

+ 1, and pump them a few times to get all the oil out. Do the same when you put oil in.

Don't even try use an allen key in the fork bottom bolt, use an allen socket and care.

The other thing is, there'll be little bits of crap, metal flakes etc, which will naturally settle to the bottom- so if you just drain the fork with a pump, you'll leave the worst behind. It's not hard to do it right though, honest!

I allways siphon mine with a lengh of 10mm tube. You can get 99% of the old stuff out. Much much easier than removing the forks.
