leaving the seals in situe? I pulled out the seals and cleaned around in their slot.

Re: Dust AND piston seals?

So this thread really gave me a complex! I rode home and checked the brakes out. I inspected all around the pads and there was no trace of fluid, BUT i squeezed the lever as hard as i could and i could hear a feint noise coming from the caliper. No fluid that i could see... but it may have sounded like a leak. I kept doing it and thought maybe the seals would make a bit of a noise when the brake activates.

Is the noise likely to be a leak? Or will seals make a noise when the piston moves?

i had a leak in mine and it only happened when the brakes were used and only noticed because of the sounds you describe followed by a drip, turned out to be a dodgy seal, you may have seen my thread about it.

probably about time i bought a seal kit then.... crap. did you ride the bike with the leak? I don't see it as dangerous, but it does seem a bit.... silly?

no i noticed it whilst i was bleeding them which is lucky!! But yeah it only seemed to leak when i pushed the pedal in.

If in doubt remove the pads and check around the seal for traces of fluid.

However whatever haynes says, removing the pistons does not = new seals required.

seems to be lots of q's about replacing seals but as YC says not always needed but if you decide to-

Re: Dust AND piston seals?

it is too late... i went on wemoto and ordered 4 of the piston/seal kits, rubber grease and some fluid.

I am going to do the whole job again on saturday!
Where brakes are concerned.. it just doesn't seem worth it.

Also, i neglected to tell you all that all 4 pistons were missing their dust seals. I should probably get some of them anyway!

Further to this, there were no squeal plates on any of the pads... this may have been my fault as i replaced the pads last time. But my brakes don't squeal anyway, so i am not worried about that.
