Re: Battery died - misshapen

Whilst I am fairly convinced you are right that its the reg/rec thats failed, is there any way to check this out for certain before replacing it?

Obviously, I don't have a working battery at the moment so currently can't check anything, but if I get a new battery, can I actually check the reg/rec without potentially ruining my brand new battery, or am I best off just replacing the reg/rec first and getting new battery, then just checking everything with a multimeter once they are both replaced to confirm everything works?

seen my thread?

Re: Battery died - misshapen

Problem I have is that if it is the reg/rec, it seems to be overcharging and boiling the battery, rather than not charging it enough, so Im just concerned about any tests that would require me to actually have the bike running and probably overcharge the battery whilst it is running.
I don't know if having the bike running the short time necessary to test it would cook a new battery or not.
Obviously some of the tests don't have the bike on, others do and Im not really sure which tests are the critical ones to confirm a knackered reg/rec rather than identifying any other charging issues.

If you read my thread yorkie chris (who has the patience of a saint) has talked me through testing. DISCONNECT YOUR REG/REC and start her up and pop round with a multimeter. The three terminals that are supposed to connect to the reg/rec need testing and need an output of 65v+.

You should be alright having it running long enough to test DCV across the battery terminals.

It's almost certainly overcharging, this is likely to be the reg rec. A duff alternator would undercharge.

Thanks you two. Having just re-read your thread Dave & what yorkie chris said, i understand now about the tests.

Will pick up a new battery and may just check the wiring from the alternator to the reg/rec to confirm its not that (although as you say yorkie chris, I can't see how it would be the alternator with it seeming to overcharge) and then just get myself a new rr.

pop the multimeter across the battery with the engine running (choke on or something) if the voltage is soaring switch off.

Will do. Reckon ig that happens its a pretty good indicator of the problem!
