The law defines the shape, reflective quality, font and spacing plus
the name of the manufacturer, meaning that if you have a seven digit number your plate will be bigger than a six or five digit number which can be a smaller plate but still conform to the legal requirement

You are indeed correct, although, since the majority of people have 7 digit reg numbers, 9x7 is generally the "right" size.

The smallest plate you could have is roughly 130mm x 101mm (5.1" wide x 4" high) for the reg. no. A1. This would be totally legal.

Just checked, and the requirements are as follows:

Letters 64mm x 44mm
Gap between letters 10mm
Gap between groups 30mm
Margin all round 11mm

So, if you won the lottery and bought registration A1 you could have a fairly small plate and still meet the regulations.

(Actual regs here: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2001/20010561.htm )

I'm sure there used to be a smaller font for bikes, but I can't find any details so I may have imagined it.

There is the car letters have to be bigger...

Letters 79mm x 50mm
Gap between letters 11mm
Gap between groups 33mm
Margin all round 11mm
Character stroke 14mm (10mm for bikes)

See DVLA form V796

I've always been legal. Personally, the fewer things that the police could pull me up on the better.

Both bikes have legal plates. First time ever. Age I'm at an if the bike looks legal less chance of getting stopped and the cnuts finding other irrelevances to lecture you about. Never had a fine in Scotland usually just a wee caution.

Anyway. Did not work. Got completely harrassed a week or so ago coming home from work , did not like me filtering past his traffic motar stuck in traffic I take it. The speccy old **** lecturing me about summit or other, "Do you know how many bikers I scrape off the road from the front of traffic lights?" Get tae F! Then spent another 5mins trying to be my pal. Just stand their and take it.

Go home snap remote control, kick dug, beat wife, kill neighbour. :D

It's law that the manufacturer of the plate must put there postcode on the bottom of the plate.

Got stopped last year (for nothing) and Cnuty McFeck the country bumpkin traffic cop informed me at Lochgoilhead that if the number plate did not have the name of the "garage" on it, the plate was probably illegal.

Went home and killed my neighbour on the otherside.;)
