Go for a ride then look where the cable ties are if they are more than 10mm away from your bottom yoke remove 1 preload (so it comes out) you will see a line then adjust the other side so they both have one line showing, go for a ride, repeat process removing 1 preload each time untill you have close to or 10mm distance between the bottom yoke and the cable tie.

Preload is there just to set the bike up for your weight. I.e. When you sit on it your weight will use up 20-30mm of the suspension travel. The 10mm distance method is really to set the compression if your bike has adjustable compression and damping settings.

Read the manual theres clear instruction in there but basically there is a notched ring above the spring. It is stepped to compress the spring more or less. You need to wind that with a tool that should be included in your tool kit. Looks like a hook.

Springs cost around the £70 mark, plus £10 for new oil. It is a very simple job but do your research. Haynes Manual time.

As Britney says £70 odd for new springs or you might find some in the for sale section...

For example http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=136562 - the springs would be suitable for your weight but they may be sold. This advert also has some Racetech Gold-valve Emulators which improve the damping, but push the price up somewhat. Just an example that you can get parts second hand.
