just to finish off this thread - I got round to looking at the sidestand and the spring was clarted in oily gunk. seems that the gunk was stopping it from closing up properly.

one good dousing in wd40 and a scrub and it seems to be working fine. was aiming for all the bumps and humps on the way home and no cut outs:shaking2:
