corrected for you ;), personally having had many temp repairs later permanently repaired I can say without any doubt it can and is done*.

*of course not all punctures are repairable and I defer to the tyre fitters judgement, but most that are capable of temp repair are later permanently repaired without issue

Essential Rubber were more than happy to take the Sticky String out of my rear tyre and replace it with a Mushroom Plug.

However there are some of the Bung type kits that *MAY* involve make the hole bigger to fit the bung, and so have you damage the tyre to an unrepairable state.

Any recommendation for a particular kit?

I resent the implication that the shop was only interested in sales. The chap with the punctured tyre has never been to the shop in question, I was just telling my friend what happened and he said that using a temporary repair meant that you couldn't repair the tyre permanently. The lad with the bike took it to his local shop and they wouldn't repair it, he bought a new tyre.

This is not correct. As long as the tyre is suitable for repair, using a temporary fix will not alter that. I suppose one could argue that that's dependent on what it is repaired with, but unless you were to use something clearly unsuitable it will make no difference.
