Ok I need to bump this thread and also ask another question....

I've taken the car to two garages and neither can hear the whine. I was in the car on one test drive and I could easily hear it, but the mechanic couldn't. They say it's just road noise, but I know for a fact it's not. It's quite a quiet but high pitched noise, and it definitely wasn't there before. He checked the bearings and said they are fine, and said if it was bearings, wait until it gets louder or starts knocking then bring it back in. Not really much use because I want rid of the noise, I don't want to wait until something fails.

So I don't know what to do about that......

Problem two:

I got some alloys off ebay recently which had tyres on them with good tread. (this was after the whining noise started). Anyway, after one wheel nearly fell off today (the nuts came loose!) I took it to the place that balanced the wheels, who tightened the nuts, apologised etc, and he noticed that one of the tyres has had a vulcanising repair done on the sidewall. He said they don't do those type of repairs because the tyre is weakened and could blow.

So should I just get a new tyre?

Its not coming from the stereo is it. Not joking, but sometimes the suppresor can fail and you get a whining noise.

As for the tyre, yes get a new one. I dont think i have ever seen a sidewall repair, thats for sure.

No definitely not the radio. Looks like I'll have to get a new tyre then.

The OP has just fitted s/h tyres though - some worn tyres can sound just like a wheel bearing on it's way out. I went for a trip around Europe with a friend last year in his Civic VTi and was convinced he had a rear wheel bearing gone - it turned out to be a crappy Pirelli P6000 on the back where the tread blocks had worn significantly on the leading edge. You could feel it just by running your hand over the tread,
