Unhappy Car Trouble

My golf started whining on the way home tonight

The noise increases/decreases with speed, not revs. So I'm thinking it will be a diff gone

How much will that cost to fix..... £1m? £2m?

Or should I just turn the music up a bit more and ignore it until it snaps?

grrrr I hate cars

Could also be, 1 of your brake discs has a stone or something wedged or more likely a wheel bearing has gone, which is a hell of lot cheaper than a drive shaft.
Check your brake discs to see if they are very worn and the pads, if they are worn right down they will make a horrendous noise, albeit normally only when braking.

Does the noise fade out or go when you dip the clutch? Which model golf is it?

Hope it's a wheel bearing. I didn't think they made a noise like that, I thought they just clunked when they died.

No. It's not affected by anything except speed. It's a mk4

You bought the Scottish model - nothing to worry about, anything Scottish will be like that.

He's right, and its most probably female too. To check this, refer to your user manual.
