System image backup every month, covers you against HD failure and any other major calamities.

If you are rebuilding, be careful to ensure you only install software that you really need. Most times I have to unbreak laptops here they are stuffed with useless software, toolbars and the like.

+1 on this - 1st thing installed after a machine is built if I am in control.

I find Avast! very good, have it on my phone, PC and laptop. Have been using it for years with no issues, so have all my friends. The Boot Time scan is also a good feature.
