Garage doors...
OK, mine just fell off, and i have both the bikes in there, and i'm not here during the day - bugger - glad i live in a low crime area...
I need to know about replacing it, is it just a trip to BnQ and some DIY or do I need a specialist installer? how much is it going to cost? timescales? We're at a level 3 panic here:eek: |
Re: Garage doors...
what sort of door is?? roller shutter type or one of those sheet metal types that pull towards you then slide underneath the roof of the building ?
|
Re: Garage doors...
it's a flat metal sheet that runs on a pair of rollers and kind of swings up to the ceiling of the garage when you open it, the top goes in and the bottom swings out
like this, but without the cheesy keyfob... http://www.easyrollgaragedoors.co.uk...n-at-door2.jpg |
Re: Garage doors...
Just wait at Cowes for anyone trying to bring your bikes back across!;)
Must be the weather, my made a funny noise last night and wouldn't close properly. |
Re: Garage doors...
A new door is going to be in the range of £500. If it's a standard size. Good luck

Re: Garage doors...
Personally I would have a go at that myself. Can't see it being that hard. Just think of it as a huge set of drawers that have rollers that you get from Ikea. If you can build one of those and it work smoothly, you CAN DO ANYTHING !
If it was the roller type - wide berth. Saw the utter travisty that was my neighbour's attempt. "Straw that broke the donkey's back" comes to mind.. |
Re: Garage doors...
lol @ roller type
looks like i have a weekend of fun ahead:D |
Re: Garage doors...
Whats wrong with it? I would have thought its unlikely that its kna*kered...probably something small needs replacing...
Have a look at the rollers and struts...are they in line? not broken? Has the frame come away from the brickwork? If so, some screws might sort it...? If you aren't confident about doing it yourself, a quote from a reputable handyman might be a way forward before you start going off to buy a new door etc... HTH, Billy. |

i'd be more inclined to replace it considering it was pretty knackered anyway (it must be getting on for 10 years old now) and i have both my bikes behind it... |
Re: Garage doors...
our door is of the cable variety with the big coiled spring at the top, its been knacked for years i just push it up rather than the spring doing its job, keep us posted on cost cus i'll be there soon:(

Re: Garage doors...
Just out of interest tho' - where are they likely to go on the Isle of Wight if they do batter down the hatches ???
|
Re: Garage doors...
My brothers company does garage conversions. He has to skip at least two doors a week. Guess where my door came from.
New doors are easy to fit, check with your local builders merchant for pricing. As a guide from my local one, they seem to be from £250 to £1000 |
Re: Garage doors...
In terms of security, are roller type doors better than up and over ones (they look less bendable- I reckon 2-3 big blokes could fold the metal of a lot of up and over ones enough that someone could crawl under)? They're certainly more grafiti-resistant (no big flat surfaces) and you're less likely to bang your head on them.

wizard: i very much doubt the bikes would disappear, the area is effectively zero crime and our road is full of good folks who watch out for each other. i'd imagine the only reason anyone would nick one on the island would be to rag it and dump it or split it for parts... still always a little concerning to have 7.5k of bikes sitting uninsured (no locked garage) while i'm at work though. |
Re: Garage doors...
Just had a quote for a new roller garage door for my garage. Space is 7'x12'. The cost £950 for a manual one, £1100 for one a motor-operated one. Bit more pricey than I imagined, they said they might be able to do it a bit cheaper in January as that was a slack period for them. Does that sound about right, or is it worth getting some more quotes?

Re: Garage doors...
I looked a while ago and was surprised! You can get kits for a fair bit cheaper if you're ok at DIY. You can save quite a bit by adapting your old door if it's compatible. £900 motorised was my quote.

Re: Garage doors...
Just had one of these fitted the other day http://www.rollergaragedoors.co.uk/ and though it's a bit pricey it's a good bit of kit - the first garage door approved to insurance and police standards. Don't know if it'll lower your premium on insurance though, so offsetting a bit of the cost
If you know the type, size, finish, bits-n-bobs etc, I'll let you know the price from the catalogue. Or have a look at www.diy.com (B&Q), they've got loads on there. |
Re: Garage doors...
Did mine a four years ago and the best deal I could find was Wickes. I got this one:
http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/201645?...9bQPNXrg%3D%3D Quite easy to fit if you're reasonably competent. It's worked fine ever since. |
