Whats in a Number (Plate)

Just had something brought to my attention.

I am getting an 08 bike, due to arrive in the next week.

However, 08 plates are not due until a week on Friday.

Should I just get the bike on a 57 plate, or wait for an 08?

Theoretically I may not be able to get the bike until Monday if it isn't delivered to the shop until Friday - which could be the case given the possible lead times.

So then it would just be 4 days waiting.

I have the Hire Bike until at least next Tuesday, so may only be 2 days without a bike, maybe only 1 and maybe even not without at all.

Opinions please, in fact lets make a poll of it

For the resale value - yes, wait, like others have said. But if you get an 08 plate, then it looks like an 'O' 'B' and could end up reading something like:

GNO8

At least with 57, you're safe!

What are you getting BTW?

I'll have waited 7 weeks for mine on an 08 plate. It's driving me nuts.

So you can wait 4 days:D Get the bus:cool:

I guess you have your answer.

Oh yes mine is a wait as well.

Re: Whats in a Number (Plate)

I never wait, even have bought with just 2 weeks till the new reg. You get the bike early, miss the rush for the first service, get a better deal etc etc.

However, in your case, its just a few days, so I'd wait, avoid paying a months tax just for those few days.

I was highly disappointed that the KN prefix is removed from sale for the 08 plate. Try it.

Edit: BO has been removed for 08 as well! However I have managed to come up with MO08 GUY for the bargain price of £799.

Oh yeah, I'd wait for an 08, the numbers in Cantonese also sound like 'year rich' in Cantonese.

As I am in London its going to start with an L

Which means on a 57 (if it hasnt already gone, the options are)

LO57 BOY

On 08, could get

LO08 MAN

think I will have to wait -dont see the plate making THAT much of a difference to resale - the docs WILL say its an 08 bike.

Thanks to all who replied.

Go onto the DVLA and request an avilable number, doesn't have to be a London number, that is just the dealers options

There's a link in my post above, I have hours of fun (not really) checking whether someone's bought my next plate (which they have, grrr) and funny combinations.

My niece just got a £1k plate for her car... and my sister also has had a personalised numberplate (which doesn't mean a thing unless you speak Cantonese) for ages

Phone call made, bike will now be an 08.

All I really want is ..08 ORK or ..08ORC .............

Re: Whats in a Number (Plate)

MAN is only for the I of Man and even there it is an old number as they have adopted the new format. I nearly bought a car over there 2yrs ago but the hassle to keep the number was having an I of M residence

Are those on the DVLA only for purchase or is there an area where you could pick your own 08 registration to put on the bike?

The dealer gets an allocation, sometimes they let you look through the list and choose something you fancy, but the good ones are always reserved by DVLA for sale / auction.
I bought a car the other month, they would not even let me see their allocation, told me this has stopped, don't know if true. ironically, I got one with my initials!

Aye, as you already decided, wait :P

On the derailed theme, I have held a dealer to ransom, cash in hand, bike PDI'd, now let me see the list of numbers or i'm off home!

Waiting was definitely the best idea - but I know you have already decided that ;)

I got to choose from about 12 reg numbers when I bought my bike - I chose the one with KLE on the end just to annoy the Kawasaki dealer as he had thought about putting it on a KLE500 :p

Yep, when I bought my R6, someone had just snagged GU56 YZF and stuck it on a Honda CB1300S
