Hugger - does one need one

I bumped into an SV rider on friday and he said to get a rear hugger as it stops the inside of the bike (shock and stuff) from getting dirty and rusty. How important is it to have a hugger? Trying to work out if I need to get one. I ride all year round. Is it a bit like the fenda extenda which you need because it protects the bike (radiator etc). Is it for esthetics that we don't get a fender with it as standard, or is it to save money. Just trying to work things out. All my previous bikes had 'normal/old-fashioned' mudguards.

If you take a pillion out in the wet, I'd recommend a rear hugger of some sort!

Yes will prolong the life of your shock and more

Re: Hugger - does one need one

Didn't have one on my 650 and with the tailtidy fitted in wet weather I always had a very wet/muddy jacket at the back. Got a hugger on my thou and this isn't a problem now and it does protect the shock a bit more, but not massively. It's the OEM Suzuki one on mine and doesn't cover that much of the back wheel.

Re: Hugger - does one need one

Thanks for responses. The OEM is far too expensive as I don't want to spend much on this bike. I'm not convinced you get anything back from it when you sell. So I'll be looking at an aftermarket one.

I wasn't sure why it didn't come with one, just money making I guess.

Red fox huggers are quality... not expensive and are really good for what you pay for they do them in a carbon finish and im sure they do other finishes... try ebay for them or type it in on google well worth looking. I believe mine cost 70 quid i cant remember but that rings bells lol!

Agreed, I wouldn't pay the price of an OEM one, luckily mine had it on when i bought the bike, but it definitely ain't worth the premium over an aftermarket one.

Sorry to hijack thread,

Can you get SV curvy huggers without the all in one hugger/chain guard?

Without all in one chain guard?

Re: Hugger - does one need one

Pyramid Plastics offer a vacum formed one which offer excellent rear shock protection as it extends down underneath the swingarm too. They zip tie on rather than bolt on though, hasn't stopped me having one for both my bikes!

This comes without a chain guard in black or carbon look (any carbon look is naff)...

on my thou i couldn't see that a hugger actually did anything so i sold it :) the water gets everywhere anyhow.

Re: Hugger - does one need one

I'm not that keen on the look of rear huggers, but I have ordered one to protect my painted undertray. And if it keeps the shock a little cleaner, that's a bonus

Re: Hugger - does one need one

I got a Black one from Busters , does the job and keeps cack off the Shock etc , don`t cost much either and bolt into place with a chain guard also . Didn`t want a colour coded one as there would be TOO much Blue :D

No issues what so ever, the 750's has been on for nearly 8 years now.

Not my bike but from the Pyramid Plastics website.

http://www.pyramid-plastics.co.uk/ca...ages/20635.jpg

You can just see it poking underneath the swingarm and protecting the suspension linkages, I like them as they offer great pretection and they blend into the bike so well.

Exactly the same as the Pyramid one above, no. You can get bolt on ones which replace the chain gurad too, most of them don't go below the swingarm.

Personally the benefit of going below the swingarm is the protection it offers to the lower part of the shock and the linkages, very commonly neglected by many owners.

I have one of these that was fitted to my bike when i bought it. I noticed it was rubbing the tyre so took it off. Was getting sick of the mess under the bike so tried to refit it and found it very difficult to get the zip ties tight enough.

Ended up taking it off agin as it wouldn't sit properly and still rubs tyre.

I want to get a hugger and will go for one with an attached chain guard next time

Re: Hugger - does one need one

The curvy has a pretty effective cr*p flap fitted anyway, the plastic bit between the wheel and shock... I've used various huggers but honestly, I don't think they make much difference at all. I hate how they look personally, though I do have a Pyramids one somewhere and it's not too offensive. But I'm not convinced that they're very functional.

Dangerous Dave 17-09-08 07:16 AM

Re: Hugger - does one need one

You need to remove the wheel to get a good fit, push it hard against the swingarm and have the lugs for the zip-ties on the underneath as this helps tighten them up. I'll see if I can dig out a picture when I get out of the training room.

Because there are no bolt holes in that area, well there is the one that holds the OEM mud flap but it wouldn't be enough.
