Front cog nut! Arrr!

This little beauty is not budging!

IIRC: 140N.m torque?

Had a mate sit on the bike in 1st hard on rear brake.

Used a half inch drive universal bar and the bike is creeping rather than the nut loosening, tried penetratnt spray, no joy.

Anyone got any tips? Stopped before I broke, ruined, destroyed something on the bike.

Cheers

Maybe take it to a garage with an air impact gun

I just bought a Power Wrench from Netto as the Dukes rear wheel nut is 154Nm

This is it in action. Click on the vid link.

Only cost 20 quid. Wish I'd had one for undoing the Sv sprocket nut and the lower suspension bolts.

Try warming nut gently with a blowtorch, jam back wheel against swinging arm with a big lump of wood. Watch for tyre valve! Be very careful with an impact wrench, can smash cogs in gearbox!

Pete! You have a house elf!

Hehehe.

Nice find Pete, I might have to invest in one. The power wrench I mean.

Did you mean poor wench Sean or is it just your accent.

I need a breaker bar about 4 foot long to undo that rear wheel nut and the chance of the socket slipping off and scratching the wheel is quite high, so I've been on the look out for one for a while. Wasn't going to pay 60 quid plus for one though.

Re: Front cog nut! Arrr!

I had to put a piece of 2inch square between the swing arm and the wheel to stop it from turning and put a scafold pole on my breaker bar to release mine. I didn't lean on it all at once i tried bouncing the pole gradually applying more weight and it eventually came undone. Be careful not to shear the bolt or break the chain!

You need more leverage and a heavy/stronger friend!

No, just a block of wood through the rear wheel and 1st gear as said before :)

does that nut turn the 'wrong' way?

Nope, anticlockwise to undo.

And just realised the link I posted earlier does not show the power Wrench in action. Now rectified.

Yep, needed an air impact wrench to get mine to shift. Then it came off no problem.

Torque it back up though.

I don't know if it's the same on the pointy (i would presume it would be) but normally the washer has an edge turned up against the nut to stop it coming loose. I forgot to flatten mine out and it was a right pain to try and undo.

Yes the same. You have removed the washer before starting right? [-o< :smt103

I didn't think it was neccessary to mention the locktab as it's so obvious to even the most incompetent of mechanics, but clearly I should have. :D:D:D

To be honest I forgot.

yeah, I flattened the tab washer out.Bit of a bandit to get at though, looks like thay do that with a machine that probably makes it effortless but no thought to geeting it back off at service.I mean you couldn't get a fag paper in there never mind a flat blade driver! Not sure, might just take the cogs n chain to a a local garage rather than risk making a complete mess of it!Cheers for input peeps

Re: Front cog nut! Arrr!

Ive just taken mine off to change chain and sprockets, had exactly the same problem. The cause..... red loctite!! First off we tried jumping on the spanner, wouldnt budge. Then my uncle brought his compresserd air impact drill thingy and we battered away at it for about 15 minutes untill it finally came loose.

Mines a K3 pointy, same as yours, and it was the origional sprocket, so maybe it is a thing Suzuki did on the K3s??!

Nothing different on the K3, I would guess it could be the fact the sprocket has been there for 5 years!

We managed mine with just fat mate on bike, 1st gear, break on, and longish breaker bar. It still took a lot of trying though!

Yeap, that is the mans way! A piece of wood is needed for the weaker mechanics... :p

By differance I ment the aplication of red loctite, as that it what was holding mine on.

I guess we will see when Cam_73 finally get it off if it has red loctite on it too.

Comes with loctite from the factory, whether you use it afterwards is a personal/mechanics preference, which makes it no different to every other SV.

I use loctite, and a big cracking bar to get them off again.

The woman's way is the impact driver...............why make things harder than they need be:p

Just don't do as I did, girls, and lean your boob against the driver..............it bruises soft bits:D

Like I said, its a personal preference and i don't on my own bikes.

Re: Front cog nut! Arrr!

I use loctite because I couldn't be rsed getting a new nut. But then again I couldn't be rsed putting the front cover on either, so can very easily check if it's backed off at all.
