Xenon Bulb - worth it?

Will it look much nicer?

i SUPPOSE the halogen bulb does look a bit funny as the rest of my bike is white.

Whaddya think?

I had the cheap ones for a wee while, one lasted about 2 months, the other went in the bin.

Osram nightbreakers replaced them, stunning bulb comparred to thre OE ones.

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

Dont bother, absolute she height at night, as i found out when i ran into a slight ditch and luckily managed to keep the bike up...

Osram nightbreakers get my vote as well, very good bulbs, or get a hid kit

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

Nah cheap chav muck. That is a normal bulb painted blue, and a cheap one at that.

Get osram nightbreaker.

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

Another vote for OSram nightbreakers, I have them in the bike and in the car. I fitted white LEDs for sidelights too, in both the SV and my car.

One of my bulbs went in the pointeriffic so I replaced it with a nightbreaker, apparently the previous bulb was chavvy ebayshop bought and now I have 1 bright as fook bulb and one yellower looking one(the osram)

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

Is it bright, or just blue?

GavinD 07-10-09 09:09 AM

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

You get one or other with a standard bulb - either very blue but not bright or very bright but not blue as the blue filter cuts out light

If you want both you need a 6000k HID kit.

Slighlty brighter (appearing) and much whiter. Not tested in the dark now you mention it though. Daytime it definitely appears brighter.

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

Fitted a few different bulbs to various bikes. The only one that actually was an improvment was Osram Silverstar 50% brighter. This Nightbreaker sounds interesting...

Having been blinded by YC's portable sun I can vouch for its brightness. DO NOT LOOK AT THE LIGHT!

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

also look at philips diamond vision - better than night breakers by far!

If you're gonna do it, don't pussy about with it, 145W of HID + 55W of halogen FTW:

HID is the way forward for light output, but if you don't want the hassle or expense I've had Phillips, Osram and Halfrauds own brand bulbs, they're equally bright and equally better than stock tbh

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

I've got some Philips X-Treme Power lamps in the car, they replaced some Osram Silverstars.
Silverstars were a good improvement on the originals when they first came out, and the X-Treme powers were a similar step up again. From what I've read, there's little to choose between Nightbreakers and X-Treme Powers, I'd go for whatever is cheaper ( Powerbulbs.co.uk are a good reliable supplier, but they also have an ebay shop where prices are usually better). Usual warning, there are some fakes on ebay.

And do you have any evidence for this? Diamond vision put out a blue light for the HID wannabee but is still a basic halogen bulb in the end. So how does the Diamond Vision achieve it's blue colour? All coloured bulbs I know of use a dichroic (sp?) filter that blocks light from some of the spectrum to colour of the light. Result? Less ACTUAL light on the road.

So unless Diamond Vision achieve the 5000K colour (HID blue) by some clever means I have not heard of, then there is NO WAY they can be better than Philips X-treme Power / Osram Nightbreakers.

EDIT: Just had a look at some Diamond Vision bulbs online. The glass is definitely coloured blue, so they are definitely filtering the light, resulting in less light on the road. So basically coloured bulbs for posing, not a lighting upgrade. To top it off these bulbs are not 'E'-marked and therefore cannot be legally used on the road in the EU.

With regards to X-treme Vs Night Breakers I found this review from april this year which gives it to X-tremes. http://www.powerbulbs.com/blog/index...night-breaker/

Seemed brighter when I upgraded from nightbreakers,

The bulbs are higher pressure (thinner xenon gas tube bit) and have a better intergrity filament that can be made thinner and so lights up brighter

They are not that blue but certainly more comfortable,

Nightbreakers are good - but I found these better.

They are not road legal - not that you'd get stopped for them and very very bright!

My post came from experience not a review (taipan thats not a dig at the review you just posted chap)

Don't want to appear stupid (I am but I'd rather hide it)... but is there a specific nightbreaker bulb I will need for a bike or are they the same in bikes and cars?

In eBay: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/__osram...=228459_228460

Which one do I buy!?

Oooh, thanks for the quick reply!!

So these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Osram-Night-Br...d=p3286.c0.m14

For example.

Is it just a straight swap over?

I wish I had a Haynes for my Gladius :(

Thanks for help.

I just looked at my headlight today and the yellow looks so silly against a white frame

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

Philips Extreme and Osram Nightbreakers are both brilliantly bright and I wouldn't choose one over the other, buy whichever your nearest shop sells/is cheaper. HID is of course excellent, but if you just want a straight swap then either of the above won't be bettered.

What's HID? :)

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

Not a normal lamp.
Puts a high voltage through a tube of xenon gas, you need a kit for that, it is a small box about the size of 20 fags with a high-voltage cable that you lead to the lamp.

More complicated to fit but hugely efficient and bright.

I'll stick with the nightbreaker for now but it's good to know!! Thanks :D

they do a bike specific version of the nightbreaker called the night racer I think

auto bulbs direct stock it

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

They do, and it remarkably looks like £28 for two over £18 for two, with presumably no difference other than the packaging.

Purchased two pack of Osram Nightbreaker bulbs from ebay for £11.40 from 'wattbulb' (due to this thread!). Fitted today. Thery're worth it just for the packaging!

Haven't been for a ride in the dark, but colour looks better and they do seem bright.

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

I've just replaced a set of nightbreakers with philips xtreme power and I have to say the difference is noticeable with one nightbreaker one philips,

The philips beam throws so much further - even when I swapped the bulbs into the opposite sides to take account of the beam patterns!

Philips gets my vote now!!

i just got Osram silver stars 55% thingy ma jobbies for the cage, i do hope they improve the standard head lights.

embee 20-10-09 05:43 PM

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

Re. the bike specific lamps.

AFAIK they are built to be a bit more robust, vibration resistant filaments etc. Having said that I haven't found any significant problem with modern branded lamps in bikes, certainly Osram Silverstars and Philips X-treme Powers have been in my bikes for a lot of miles with no failures yet. I believe the more robust designs slightly reduce the light output. They are probably worth considering for off-road/ATV use but for on-road use just stick with the normal auto spec branded lamps (Osram/Philips etc) and you'll be fine.

Re: Xenon Bulb - worth it?

I've had an nightbreaker fail and its been less than 4 months, dad's one also blew in his harley - maybe a bad batch.
