How to remove the front wheel without the bike falling over thread

Anyone got any tips without buying a front stand? Ive got a rear stand, but not a front one and I need to get the front wheel off so I can get the tyre changed.

thanks peeps:cool:

Car jack & a piece of plywood under the engine, with the rear stand in position.

Just make sure it's secure

When I did my fork seals, we

1. Put the bike on a rear paddock stand
2. Stacked up some bricks to rest underneath the engine ( watch the exhaust when you do this and put some wood between the actual engine and the bricks, and be bl**dy careful )
3. The we used a decent good strong piece of rope and looped it through the yokes and strung the rope through the rafters in my dads garage and then pulled it up off the ground that way. If you're going to do this, make sure the rafters will take the weight of the bike first.

That gave us enough room to get the front wheel out and also take the forks out to.

I have to say its not ideal, and if you can borrow a front paddock stand from somebody locally that would be probably better, but it did work...

Or better still buy an ABBA stand, makes everything less fraught and less likely to fall over.

If you have an ABBA stand you can just lift the engine up by whatever means which tips the weight rearwards, as it pivots around the swingarm pivot

I don't like using rear stand. You have only 2 points of contact.

Put car jack under engine, jack bike over on its side, weight is held across 3 points (sidestand, rear wheel, engine) and it is very solid.

Make sure you do tie the bike to the rafters otherwise it could fall over and dent the tank causing £130 of damage. Not that that happened to me [-(

If you have crash bungs I tied the rope to them and put it over the rafters. The next time I wanted to jack the front up, I though it'll be fine! :-(

I like this idea :)

unfortunatly I dont have a garage so it will be done outside so I dont have any rafters to suport the weight

That was how I did my original frontend swap.

Use a rear padock stand, weight the rear seat, trolley jack under the engine with a piece of wood for protection. If you leaving the bike for any length of time, put your axle back through and an axle stand under it. When I came back to mine the trolly jack had lowered off !!!

The engine has a hole at the front of the sump, directly below the oil level glass in this picture

http://image.sportrider.com/f/886568...650+engine.jpg

Stick a steel bar through this hole and use an axle stand (or a pile of bricks, or a pile of books, etc) a each end of the bar, one each side.

Yes, then you put the stands under the brackets rather than the pegs! Have to be a bit more careful.

Pegs on my bike are too far back (pointy SV), if you put the footpeg brakets on stands the back wheel would be off the floor not the front. I guess the pile of wood is holding it up. Good way to get both wheels off the ground though.

i use a 10mm stainless steel rod inserted here:

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/4473/sv650engine.jpg

then put up on a pair of axil stands. not a one man job though.

It can be done on your own. Put the bike on the sidestand and jack up the right hand side far enough to get the axle stand under the bar on the right. Let the jack down and the bike will be supported by the axle stand on the right, the rear wheel and the sidestand on the left with the bike leaning heavily to the left and the front wheel in the air. Now jack the left side of the bike up until it is upright and level again and place the other axle stand under the other end of the bar on the left. Take the jack away.

Can you tell my wife would have a strop if I interupted her from whatever she was doing, to come out to the garage and help me?

Re: How to remove the front wheel without the bike falling over thread

Doesn't even need a jack, just put the right side on the axle stand then push and lift the bike while sliding the stand under with your foot. :)

It's a steel bar on a steel axle stand, it tends to slide about if it has any sideways pressure on it and knock the stand over, so I find using a jack to lift under the engine, just to the left or right of the centre of gravity, depending on which side you want to lift, gives the best stability whilst lifting.

I didn't say it was a sensible or safe way to do it. :)

I've got one, but it lifts the forks, which are kind of missing from most of these photos...

Re: How to remove the front wheel without the bike falling over thread

I have 3 fronts 2 x underforks and 1 under yoke :p but this thread is about removing the front wheel. I'd recommend the Motrax ones with spring loaded fork cups which are very good and robust, but most of their other stuff (tyre warmers etc) is poo.

I just prefer the sidestand and trolley jack method, you can get whole front end including yokes out then which is important to service head bearings or do fork swap.

I too use the t-jack and sidestand but love the step ladder way!=D>:D If i go to my Father-in-laws garage I can use the electronic hoist too. I wouldn't mind a head stock stand? Are they any good?

Yeah great and solid for working on brakes, forks, front wheel just no good if you want to change yokes, grease bearings etc.
