squeaky rear brake

hey all,

bit of an embarrassingly annoying one im afraid.

when i apply my back brake when going slowly, it squeaks horrible,

im not massively technically minded,

what can i do?

Re: squeaky rear brake

Take the pads out and refit them with a smear of copper grease on the non-friction side, between the pads and the pistons

Re: squeaky rear brake

Might be something else, but check your brake pads.
Mine used to squeak when they were getting low.

And what TLW said .

Re: squeaky rear brake

is it a wheel off jobbie?

Re: squeaky rear brake

I doubt it - Haven't done it on my old SV but on the ADV it's one locating pin and the pads fall out the calliper, can't imagine Mr Suzuki designing a bike where the only way to change the pads involved removing the wheel:cool:

i'll have to have a look later on, hopefully it will be an easy fix,

are new pads expensive?

Re: squeaky rear brake

On the ADV they're ~£20 a pair from the dealer, but at 6k miles I doubt you'll need them unless you drag the rear brake everywhere...

thats what i thought, but then i was thinking maybe they kind of expire or something,

is there a section on here that explains how to remove the pads?

Re: squeaky rear brake

I'd imagine it's in the owners manual, but I've been a bit spoiled by KTMs extensive instructions in theirs...

If not someone who knows more than me can probably explain it better, but on the KTM it's a 60 second job to change the backs

Re: squeaky rear brake

the haynes explains it quite well.
Word of warning you sometimes have to split the caliper to do it

Re: squeaky rear brake

well that doesnt sound fun...

andrewsmith 05-05-10 09:56 AM

Re: squeaky rear brake

rephrase that check the haynes as my advice is for the underslung curvy rear caliper.
You probably be able to remove the pin and get them out.

Re: squeaky rear brake

the main problem is removing the pin... sometimes they can seize in place and some times need a bit of persuading to come out ie heat and plyiers, it a wheel on job, and is pretty easy job.
search for pad removal on here for more advice.

check the caliper pistons are working and clean, ie no or very little corriosion around them, black brake dust is ok.. Gently push them back into the caliper with a screwdriver... ( notice gently ! on the metal part of the pad not the friction part. ) remove the R clip from the pin, Simply remove the pin and remove the pads, Check for wear and apply a thin coating of copper grease or Nickel basiced Never Seize compound on the REAR... ie the non Friction part of the pads that get pressed by the caliper pistons, replace pads if all is okay. replace pin ( clean up pin and coat in a thin coat of said copper grease, replace R Clip, pump rear brake a few times to resit pistons and pads.

hth's

I have some pictures of back caliper here for you.
http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=150954
Some brake pads have a piece of soft metal right at the end of the friction material to make the brake squeal when it is close to the end, but it could just need grease on the back of the pads. Just do what I didn't, and make damn sure it works PROPERLY before you ride.
