sv nekid getting rained on
Does it do the sv any harm to leave it outside to get rained on all the time? I leave mine outside all the time and am getting lazy as i cant be bothered to cover it up any more.
If it does do damage over time what are the areas to keep an eye on? |

Re: sv nekid getting rained on
Make sure front spark plug don't get wet from water getting in through the drain hole or plug cap

Re: sv nekid getting rained on
if you're that bothered, staple together a load of plastic sacks to fit over the bike lol, will keep the majority of the rain off.

Re: sv nekid getting rained on
I find water gets in the ignition barrel and clutch switch so they need stripping and cleaning every few months to get the corrosion off the contacts. Thats about all thats happened, and its been sitting outside, uncovered since august.

Don't be a lazy ****. Your SV will rot.

Re: sv nekid getting rained on
On a similar topic, is there any point in covering a bike that is already wet? I understand putting a cover on a dry bike to keep the rain off, but if the bike is already wet, it'll just be wet under a cover, or wet in the rain.

I mean - in the Rossendale Valley it can quite happily rain for a week :( |
Re: sv nekid getting rained on
I can answer that question for you as i covered mine up last night as it was ****-ing it down and bike was **** wet through. When i uncovered it this morning it was slightly moist but most the water had evaporated. But the stormex does claim 'while being waterproof it allows the cover to breath and lets dry air circulate'.
Its still a pain in the ass getting it off and on when lashing it down though. Not to mention next doors cat tiddling on it on dry days! You just cant win :-( |
Re: sv nekid getting rained on
I would recommend not covering up an already wet bike, reason being; I had a YBR125, covered it up when it was wet and it sat under that cover for a few days, when I came back to it the exhaust can had turned a rather ugly brown colour. Seemed the wetness and then the sun on the bike the next day didn't really do it any favours. I guess it creates quite alot of humidity under the cover.. for that reason if the bikes already wet i'll leave it to dry out the next day.

Re: sv nekid getting rained on
Cough. . . Ahem. . . Unless you have a cover that allows it to breath that is.

Re: sv nekid getting rained on
The cover I have does allow it to breath, yet it still rusted up (it was only surface rust so easily wiped off) Although if left for a long time could do long term damage

Re: sv nekid getting rained on
I cover all the metal bits (apart from brakes) in ACF50. Bike stays wet and grubby but the grubbyness is ontop of the ACF50 and not the actual metal work. On the occasions when I clean off the ACF50 it does not look any worse than those that get shamied off after every trip round the block.
Keep an eye on any discolouration and catch it early. Fill all nooks and crannies with the oily gloop of your choice and cover it if you know it's not going to be used for a while. That's what I do anyway. My bike may well turn into compost before a thoroughly dried and cleaned bike but if I have spare time I prefer to ride my bike rather than wash my bike. I trade riding time for maintenance time but not cleaning time. Please feel free to disregard this response if you prefer to maintain a shiny example. |
