panniers or tankbag u decide

ok i can't decide what to do so any ideas. i am going away at the end of the month & can't decide weather to buy a set of oxford humpback panniers

http://www.oxprod.com/

or should i get the tank bag to match the tankcover i already have from bagster, i was thinking the athena one

http://www.baglux.co.uk/tankbags.asp

thor 11-07-05 01:26 PM

The athena has the zip for the map pocket on the inside, and the map pocket is too small. Get the Tektra instead.

Scoobs 11-07-05 01:27 PM

Depends how much you want to carry. The tank bags are ok for a small amount, but get in the way (for me) if they are filled up or you get a big one. Can't get down over the tank or duck down at motorway speeds.

Akula 11-07-05 01:28 PM

Def tankbag

thats what puts me of them

Oh and panniers are better in cross winds and can hold more, but make it harder to filter. Hard panniers that can lock to your bike also mean that you don't have to lug them everywhere. Go on, buy a top box!

no topboxes

thor 11-07-05 01:31 PM

TBH, you can pack a lot into a rucksack, sweep inside a bin liner and bungy it to the tail. It won't affect your riding and bungy nets are really cheap. If your bag is very big get two nets or some gaffa. It will also be a lot easier to carry around when you reach your destination.

Carsick 11-07-05 01:31 PM

Unless you're talking about full on central london filtering then panniers (or pillions for that matter) make bugger all difference to filtering.

For proper trips get panniers, for commuting and day trips use a tank bag. Tanks bags can also be useful to support a little weight on long journies.

Seconded, and if you have problems with it squirming around you can just wear it if needs be

Yeah I've done this with know aero back pack, and tested it up to 115mph (on a private road, in another country...) and in a heavy rain storm (not at the same time).

Grinch 11-07-05 01:51 PM

I've got the whole kit.. though I think I need to replace my tank bag.

Iansv 11-07-05 01:55 PM

Viney 11-07-05 01:59 PM

Tailpack

Iansv 11-07-05 01:59 PM

I was wondering myself, perhaps due to getting a leg over the top. If that's the case then it doesn't matter, fully loaded even I can't get my leg over the top of the luggage.

Cronos 11-07-05 02:03 PM

Tankbag is much more practical provided you're not taking too much.

thor 11-07-05 02:04 PM

Make sure you bend your knee when you swing your leg over, or take a foot stool!

I found having a tailpack (ie a rucksack strapped to the back) a real problem in side winds, it acted like a sail. In a group of bikes, I was the lightest rider on the lightest bike, once the tailpack was removed, I found it a lot easier going.

Tankbags are great I'm sure, but no good for me as I'm already drapped over the tank.

CoolGirl 11-07-05 02:13 PM

I used a small tankbag and a tailpack for all my touring and managed very well.

Only other advice I'd offer is if you're thinking about using a rucksack or backpack for long journeys, forget it. You'll be hot and sticky underneath it, it'll impair your mobility and generally be a pain in the @rse. One of the guys on the inaugural Eurotour had one and it spolit his trip. Best to get the bike to carry the load. Oxford stuff has straps and hanfles if you need to carry it around with you.

And don't forget to adjust your suspension if you're carrying heavy stuff (a heavy duty chain in the tailpack seriously affected the steering and I nearly ended up in a field  )[/b]
