Motrax DHM?
Has anyone had the unfortunate opportunity to "test" a set of Motrax DHM on their bike through having a fall?
I'm loathe to pay for any R&G ones after they were too tight to offer any show discount at the NEC, so are these ones as good? Otherwise, what's my other main alternatives to R&G bungs? Harris? |
The DHM ones have been tested and been found to be lacking. The R&G ones hold up much better but have also been found to be lacking by more than a few people. The ones with the most knowledgable recommendations seem to be moko or JHS. Both are only slightly cheaper than the R&G, though.

Wasn't massively bothered about them being cheaper than R&G, just thought R&G were a tight set of gets when they wouldn't offer any show discount.

What you said about the right side is a little un nerving, that seems the most prone to crashes! |
i am also looking to buy some, the ones that go right through the engine bolt.
I had R and G's on my old bike which saved me a couple of times when i slid downt he road on my bum, but they are about double the price of DHM's. |

got them but aint try'd them yet. dont expect to either. the way i see it is for £40 its better than having nowt there. :roll:

The right side DHM is as good protection as a promise to pull out... Absolute cack. You're spot on about the link in the middle, the thread's too short (It might be 60mm long, but the supplied bolt only goes about 10mm into the thread) and it's just ordinary aluminium. It's not even capable of bearing the tightening torque without suffering, let alone protecting the bike in the event of a crash. The left hand one is pretty solid, though.
Motrax did tell me that the bolt would be replaced with a longer one when they refunded mine- I was lucky enough to have it fail on fitting instead of in the line of duty- but I really don't think it has. Really it needs a longer bolt, and a steel spacer. In fact, really it needs to not bolt up in that position at all, but to go through the engine like all the good mushrooms do. If I was buying new ones tomorrow, I'd buy GSG Moko (cheap on Ebay...) or JHS. My old R&Gs served very well, I couldn't find fault with them at all, but people whose opinions I trust totally found them too weak- and it seemed to be as much machining as design flaws too. I sold mine planning to fit a set of lowers, and after 2 big crashes and one smaller one, they were still in great condition (I'd replaced the rubbers, mind) I replaced those with the new R&Gs, which are very good. The bolts that retain teh bungs bend quite easily but don't snap- this means the bungs themselves will be good for only one big crash, but on the other hand bending like that will absob a huge amount of energy in a crash. The replacement parts are very expensive though- more for 2 rubbers and a bolt than an entire set of Ebay GSG Mokos would be! |
Just spoke to JHS and they said that they no longer make the crash bungs :shock: gutted!
Although they told me they can get bungs from an alternative supplier for £45. They haven't yet told me any other details about who makes them though. :? |

I just contacted that guy too... I need to replace both R&G bungs, and that comes to something daft like £55 plus p&p! I'd ordered them, but they're lost in the mail, so I'm tempted to just tell them not to send replacements. The Mokos look so much better and by reputation work as well if not better. I did like having all the same make, R&G everywhere, but I think the Mokos make more sense.
Also considering lookng for compatible bung parts off a different model... The SV R&Gs look pretty bad, largely because of the contoured bung. They use a standard bolt so if I can find bungs off a different bike that are the right length I'd go fo them. Anyone know of similiar length bungs? GSXR K3 seem quite similiar... |

I tested a Motrax in a slow speed (20mph)RHS spill last year and it did OK.I agree with what has been said about the design limitations though and doubt it would survive anything much faster.On a naked bike it shares the impact with the handlebar and of course the can on all models.In my case the bolt bent slightly but the bike slid along gracefully until the exhaust contacted the kerb.I hav'nt tested the LHS bung but would suggest swingarm bobbins and fork protectors might help.

What bungs are best for the K3? I was thinking of getting R&Gs but if theres better out there, then ill take a look

ive got to say "i only got the DHM's because they were the cheapest"

ok there seem to be alot of dhm bashing arround here ive gone down twice with dhm once on each side and both arond 30 mph the time i went on the left side was nasty having carved about 50% of nylon of the puck. i still could get the bolts out and fit new ones. i personaly think that there is anything wrong with them of course a biger crash is diffrent story but what make of mushroom is going to save your bike at 50-60 mph when it hits the wall. they arent magical things that save your bike from being a right off they just aid in damage limitation. my point being ive gone down twice and have had no problems with dhm so why pay load of dosh for r&g when they are (in my eyes) no better that dhm :)

In case you missed it, I was talking about the ones I used on my '00 model. Which were ****. It's not a question of "bashing", it's pure and simply warning people off a product that is no use at all out of the box.
Out of curiousity, how hard did you drop it on the right with yours? I think the design's similiar but if it has the longer bolt that the carbed ones ought to have, it could be more effective. |
its nice to hear of something positive about the DHM but as northwind said did you go down on the r/h side? perhaps the bolt is now longer?

thats me again i though that dhm were the same for both bikes. the right hand side drop wasent so bad. the bike just slid across the road for about 25 feet before settling up underneath the car in front.

Sounds not bad at all then. They're basically the same design for both bikes, but the spec's slightly different.
