Help Guys - Flooding?

Hi guys, for the past couple of days my bike's been playing up.

When riding the bike, at low revs it seems to flood when I try to pull away, it stutters and then comes back to life.

Immediate thoughts: crud in the carb(s)
flooding the carb(s)
misfiring cylinder?

What else might it be? I have a fender extenda, so its unlikely to be water, and both exhaust downpipes are equally hot so there's not one cylinder not working.

What else could it be?

Cheers guys (and girls)

Jake

Check the condition of the plugs if one (or both) are soot black, the bike's running very rich.

Check you're getting a good strong spark off both plugs.

Undo your carb drain bolts and check nothing but nice clean fuel comes out the bottom, any watery rusty, floaty bits are a sure sign of water and gunk in the tank

Best of luck

Choke cable?Check it's not sticking and the carb plungers are free.

dont think it is, cos it idles fine...

Hey, I've started having the same problem with my '00 as well.

I've checked the fuel system and pulled the carbs to clean, then I went to check the electrical and found the ignitor coils to be coming up way short of the spec'd voltage.

Chased it back through the coupler and down to the starter. Found the starter to be good, but came back with a weird resistance reading from the white wire. Not sure how it all fits together, but I'm going to do the carbs tonight and see what that does.

I'll let you know how it turns out, but if you find anything else on yours in the meantime, let me know.

Got similar with mine, very intermittant but really bad when low on fuel so i'd imagine its crap in the tank

cheers guys, will give it all a go at the weekend.

mines all filled up but its still crappy :o(

And check for water in the carbs.

Hmm, was riding to work today, it cut out twice at lights at the beginning and mid/end of my journey, but then stayed alive when I got to work :?

Well, tis the weekend tomorrow, the ER5 will be fixed, and I'll be riding that to work.

Also my Dad suggests it may be the electrics, as it is cutting out at random times.

Maybe a liberal spray of WD40 will help...

don't want to set you on a downer, but it could be more than one problem

A possible cause of water ingress could be this,

the original sv can suffer with a fracture of the overflow pipe (leading from the filler cap), as this runs through the tank it can lead to water in the fuel, and on occasion even the back bottom corners rusting though  .

not alot you can do about it though, as normally this needs a new tank (although I have done one with some flexable plastic pipe and sealed it at the filler cap), if this is the case your best bet is to plug the hole in the filler cap, ahlthough this will obviously mean overfill won't run away.

Cheers Mark.

Well I really hope its only one thing... and something simple...

Well, I can offer that it's probably not the carbs.

I took mine apart yesterday and everything appeared to be fine. They were clean enough and all the seals were tight. I cleaned 'em anyways since they were open, but it's back to the drawing board.

I'm going to investigate the starter generator more soon, but I'm off to Whistler this weekend for boozin' and snowboarding.

Gotta get my kicks somehow, bike or no bike.

CARB ICING ?

Code:

Choke cable?Check it's not sticking and the carb plungers are free.
Common problem this. Caught the corrosion on mine before it became an issue. DarylB took his '99 Sv into the dealer and his were completely gummed up.

surely cant be the choke cable, cos its idling normally?

its not carb icing, im sure...

the wd40 all over the engine/plugs/electrics seemed to work, then it chucked it down again and it started playing up again.

my guess now is dodgy electrics or plugs, though the plugs were replace d on my service...

could well be a coil and/or HT lead going down.

It can run OK at idle and light load, but when you open the throttle the voltage requirement for the spark increases which can show up any weaknesses.

Best way to decide this is by substituting known good parts. Technical diagnosis of coils/leads requires specialist equipment, do it by trial and error first.
