Rapidly going off rain...
 

Last winter rain was no problem to me, but this year its a nightmare. My trusty Shoei pin lock system mists up quickly, my toasty Racer waterproof gloves get damp, my Bering waterproof trousers are leaving me with a nice wet crotch and the tried and tested wipe visor with finger technique doesn't seem to clear much water anymore. Either this years rain is nastier than last years, or I'm getting sweatier (and incontinent!) as I get older, or my kit is deteriorating. I reckon its the latter.

So I reckon I need to buy:
Some kind of waterproofing (spray on / wash in?) to fix the gloves and trousers
Some anti-fog spray for the visor
A vee-wipe or similar, or maybe even some magic water-repellent gunk for outer visor?

Recommendations appreciated!

Most waterproof kit, at some stage in it's life will need re-waterproofing. Hein Gericke do sell a waterproofing spray that you spray onto your kit and leave to dry (from memory, I try not to ride in the rain :D ). As for the visor, I'm surprised that it's starting to fog up, it's probably worth having a good look at the seals, to make sure they are still good, and maybe taking it off, drying it out and re-fitting. Failing that, I like to use the pink spray on stuff from HG (again, I should be on commission) It works for me. As for the outside of the visor you can get another spray on chemical (HG again) that makes the water bead up a lot more, which means that the drips flow off the visor with just a turn of your head, or a quick wipe.

have you checked that the insert hasnt 'slipped'? its quite common for the inserts to slide down the inside of the visor, creating a small gap between the two.

I tried Rainex on my XR1000 visor and didn't get on with it, the big blobs of rain flew off a treat but it left tiny drops that I could not get rid of even by wiping. In the dark this made clear vision difficult with the lights of traffic in the opposite direction. I'm not saying it does not work, just that It did not work well for me thats all.

If misting is a problem (I find the pinlock works very well) try Bob heath anti fog or use some slightly washing up liquid on the inside.

I'd suggest that this is probably not the good idea it seems. Remember washing up liquid has salt in it. Which will scratch your visor if you rub to hard whilst wiping the washing up liquid on your visor. Trust me I've done it.

Also Rainex according to the fine print on the bottle isnt recommended for visors. Halfrauds do sell a very similar product that is though.

As for misting if your pinlock isnt working its probably not "stuck" to the visor properly. Try removing and cleaning it and the slightly moistening the silicone bead around the edge of it before re-attaching. Also consider a "Foggy" Respro mask. Can be a bit claustrophic but it will stop you breathing on your visor and fogging the inside of it.

ON the back of this thread I've jusyt bought a foggy respro mask. I use the caberg V2 helmet. Fogging isn;t too bad on the main visor but on the drop down tinted one it's terrible. I'm hoping that this will sort it out.

Ive used washing up liquid on my visors and not had a problem with scratching.i don't rub it in,just smear a bit on with water.Maybe it's cos I use that Fairey stuff----Soft on your skin/soft on your visor. :)

I'm the same. My trick is to put a TINY amount of Fairy in a dish, fill up most of the way with almost-boiling water.

According to the advert, a little fairy goes a long way.

Then I use a TINY amount of the solution (after allowing the water to cool) on kitchen roll. Wipe the visor gently inside & out. Then repeat with JUST water. Then repeat again with dry kitchen roll.

Works a treat, and haven't seen any scratches. I figure there's a small amount of salt in the washing liquid, and I use a tiny amount of that, diluted, settle a little, a tiny amount of that & then I'm gentle. So the risk is minimised.

I take it that is the homeopathic approach to visor preparation?

That's FAR too much hassle for me. I'm hoping the breath guard will take any effort involved in a fog free visor away.

The breath guard doesn't help much when the visor is dirty due to riding in the rain & road spray though ;)

Best place to get the mask is?

Oh and be careful with Kitchen roll because that can be scratchy to...

I bought my Foggy mask from my local bike dealer but I would imagine most places stock them. try M & P or Bustes places like that.

I know that some people use a thing called a V-Wipe that attatches to your glove its like a mini windscreen wiper that you can rub across your visor to clean the water and muck off of.

I've never had a problem with scratching using diluted washing liquid scratching, maybe it depends on the brand and level of dilution. I also only use Bounty kitchen roll as it's non abraisive. I use it to wipe excess water from newly developed film which is very soft and I've not got any scratches from that.

For getting rid of grease deposits I use a very small amout of meths, works wonders (cheap too). As always when cleaning anything you look through do not use too much force.

will foggy mask fit a flip front?
 

Every time I stop I need to lift my visor because of the condensation build up , so I really need a foggy mask. Will the foggy fit in my HJC CL flip front ?

Thanks for the replies, just bought a Foggy, we'll see how that works on Monday. ejohnh, on the packaging it says "Known not to fit ..... flip lid crash helmets" so I guess the answer is no for you.

Had a chat to the bloke in the bike shop about my pin lock misting, he reckons that they come with a hydroponic (?!?) coating and that wears off, best to get a new insert. I thought I'd try the foggy first.

Also got some Nikwax waterproofing restorer, hopefully that will fix my trousers....
