Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
Has anyone on here managed to mount Sat Nav on a faired pointy sport.
If so what model sat nav was it. I have just had a look at the bars on the bike and it looks like there is no where to mount them? Help please cos I really need this for a trip and don't want to order it to find the mount is load of Wazz for the SV. |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
Haven't done a sat nav myself, but this stuff is top quality. Used by loads of people.

Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
Yeah I know, thats what comes with the Garmin and the Tomtom, trouble is I can't see how it mounts to the SV S point handle bar arrangement. There is is no room.

Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
I've put my Garmin I3 on the screen using a standard mount with a bolt through it. I took the power from the side lights using a 5 volt reg and an old Garmin cable. Works well :p

If you go to http://www.ram-mount.com they have a motorcycle wizard that shows you which parts you will need to mount your GPS/SAT NAV.
If you PM me your e-mail I'll sent you some pics of how I have mounted mine, it's on a Triumph Daytona but it may give you some ideas. |

Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
Velcro on the clock fairing surround attaching to velcro on the back of my PDA for me.
With, cigarette lighter under my pillion seat hard wired to battery |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
on my pointy the tom tom (original Rider) is mounted on my front brake lever bracket.
I had to twist the brake clockwise a little to prevent te sat nav bracket hitting the fuel tank when I did a right turn. Give us a bit, i am on a training course but once i get home I will take a picture of it for you and post it up here. Cheers Rich |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
I ride an 08 SV650 Sport. I found a great mount that replaces the front half of the clamp that holds your break lever on the handlebars. This mount looks the same as the stock clamp except it has the ball used for almost all GPS mounting systems on the top. I like it because it does not use a shiny chrome u-bracket, looks professional and stock, and is barely noticeable if the GPS is off the bike. I purchased it at RAM mounts. The part number is RAM-B-309-1. I purchased a kit to mount the Garmin Nuvi 500 but that part is the backbone to mount any GPS. Tomorrow I'll send pics.

Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
I mount my Garmin 275t on the rev counter using the supplied mount. I have attached a power socket to the bike on the handlebar too. I have tested this out for hours at all sorts of speeds and works fine. Sat nav mount has never come loose but as a safeguard i got an additional 12v power lead that has a right angle mini usb connector. When this is plugged into back of satnav i put a few pieces of black electrical tape on the back. If the satnav did come loose it would not fall far at all.

Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
The most secure and unobtrusive way is to use a Telferizer RAM mount on the top yoke nut. Google them.
|
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
I stick my tom tom 510 on the rev counter, fits perfect.
Use the normal window suction mount. Not so funnily enough, Damn thing packed up on me yesterday while in my car. Came up 'error while planning' or something, so turned it off and its never came back on. Batteries charged, but will not come on. Have to send it back as its under warranty still. Phil |

We'll be fitting a bracket onto Hilary's bike, once the bar conversion has been done. |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
I've got this so far http://www.buybits.com/product/sku_3608.aspx
But how do you mount a Camera / GPS to the diamond bit at the top? GPS is probably by buying yet another component but what about fitting a camera? My manual for the DSC T200 says not to use a screw longer than 5.5mm but nothing about width. Why's this all such a faff? |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
The diamond plate locates diagonally onto the back of a TomTom Rider mount. You feed the screws through the holes into two of the four locating screws and its done.
As for a Camera mount, you remove the diamond plate and fit a different ball-ended mount the fixes to your camera. |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
Might just get the evotech mount then
|
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
This place has loads of mounts, look pretty decent and cover a load of different sat nav systems

Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
What camera do you have?
I use a Sony HQ-2 bullet cam attached to a DVX h.264 . I either use a helmet mount suction mount system or a clamp on the handlebars rather than a RAM mount system. You might get a good dedicated camera solution from these guys - DogCam |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
I've got a Sony DSC-T200, It's a digital camera but the video on it is pretty good. I'm not going to buy a dedicated bullet cam & DVX, just wanted to use this with a relatively cheap mount. Evotech looks the simplest and I've ordered some bespoke bolts to mount it. Simples.

Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
I was pointing you in the direction of the dedicated mounts, not the camera.
Glad you have something sorted. |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
Oh I see, sorry bud. Yeh haven't bought it yet but contemplating although they are £35 for not much!
|
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
No worries mate, simple misunderstanding. No apology needed.
I have used this mount for the bullet cam and a normal digital camera on the bike, in the car and for general use. It has a shock absorbant RAM mount ball on the camera end and will happily take a normal digital camera or video camera. £22.99 delivered. I mount it on one side of the bars and use a RAM mount for the SatNav on the other side. |

I looked in the manual, low and behold it now works.:D Instead of tom tom designing a reset button feature, why didnt they just stop the bloody thing packing up in the first place:confused:. Phil |

Oh well it seems ok now, thank god (or the reset button) |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
Sorry if this has already been covered but can't be bothered to read the whole thread. I borrowed my mate's Garmin 550 today and it fitted straight on using the mount that comes with it.
I had to move the clutch lever slightly nearer to the grip, this gave just enough space to mount the Satnav on the gap at the end of the bar. I have since given the sat nav back but the mount is still on there as he has to use a custom mount for his Thundercat which he had welded to his top yoke nut. I can provide pics of the mount if you like. |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
Just fitted a mount for my car satnav on my sprint st (garmin 670).
Had a look at the RAM mounts and got totally confused - there are bloody hundreds of different options. In the end i picked up the phone and had a chat with Bob from: www.telferizer.com He really knows his stuff - told him what bike and what satnav, and he recommended a few bits - two days later they were on my doorstep:- http://lh4.ggpht.com/_21eccP-FJ2o/Sr...0/DSC_0026.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_21eccP-FJ2o/Sr...0/DSC_0034.JPG The ball mount repaces on of the bolts between the handlebars & top yoke:- Before: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_21eccP-FJ2o/Sr...0/DSC_0027.JPG After: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_21eccP-FJ2o/Sr...0/DSC_0030.JPGhttp://lh5.ggpht.com/_21eccP-FJ2o/Sr...0/DSC_0031.JPG Compare & contrast: http://lh5.ggpht.com/_21eccP-FJ2o/Sr...2/DSC_0029.JPG Two minutes later it was all connected:- http://lh3.ggpht.com/_21eccP-FJ2o/Sr...2/DSC_0039.JPG http://lh4.ggpht.com/_21eccP-FJ2o/Sr...0/DSC_0040.JPG After a bit of adjusting, I have got a full view of both the GPS and the clocks, even with a tankbag. Total cost for all the bits was about £60 +p&p. Have now got it wired for power & sound through the Autocom, works a treat. It is at the ideal height to be able to see it clearly enough without having your eyes off the road for too long. If you need any advice re mounting a satnav, pick up the phone to Bob - details below:- Telferizer Motorcycle RAM Mount Systems 95 St. Lesmo Road Cheadle Heath Stockport Cheshire SK3 0TZ England Telphone: 0161 476 5701 (after 6.30pm) When Emailing an enquiry, please supply the make, model and year of manufacture along with a contact phone number. Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.

I was watching this thread because I need to sort out a sat nav for my sprint and its obvious that I would find this information on the SV forum isnt it? |
Re: Mounting Sat Nav on a Pointy.
Cheap and cheerful like
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GIVI-HANDLE-BA...QQcmdZViewItem You gets what you pay for but it's non model specific and you can use it on any bike takes less than a minute to fit and it's waterproof |
