Cant see the point, please enlighten me:smt095 |
Re: Why hide your Numberplate
It's so people can't clone your vehicle isn't it?

Thats exactly what I was thinking.

And presumably if someone wanted to clone an SV it would be easier to come and look here for a similar looking one than waiting until they saw one on the road. |

It seems just to be the thing to do, rather then any real protection of the bike etc |
Re: Why hide your Numberplate
How much time does it take to run a photo thru "paint" and scribble over the plate compared to the time it will take you to convince the authoriies that you are not responsible.

Re: Why hide your Numberplate
I say hide your plate, this is an essential part of modern biking.
You are an outlaw, your exhaust is too loud, you ride too fast, your visor is dark and your number plate is smaller than required. You smack car mirrors, scratch luxury vehicles with knee sliders and scare dementia suffering Daily Mail readers. The authorities search the interwebs looking for unwashed heathen just like you, so they can stitch you up and make an example of you as a lawbreaker that flouts your illegal doings on the internetz. They are watching! |

Re: Why hide your Numberplate
I've not realy given it much thought, if I posted a photo I would clear others plates (and mine while I'm at it), if someone posted mine then I don't think I'd make an issue about it.

Re: Why hide your Numberplate
I like to do it sometimes...
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...s/fromrear.jpg but I doubt I've that much to fear from cloning ;) The argument for, is that many more people can see a pic on the internet than will see the bike parked up, and it's pretty easy to do a google image search if you put the bike model into your photo description. The argument against is that paranoia rots the brain. |

Re: Why hide your Numberplate
It's also easier for people to find your address if they have your number plate and then come and nick your bike/car etc.
Getting access to the DVLA database is not as hard as you would think. |
Re: Why hide your Numberplate
you used to be able to get an address off a number plate by just filling in a form at the post office and paying £5 but you cant do it anymore, my solicitor had a right game trying to get details off dvla to trace a whitness.

Re: Why hide your Numberplate
Another reason might be...
"Here's a picture of my bike..." on one thread, then "The other day I was doin' 120 mph down the A666..." and having that sinking feeling when you receive a NIP  like the fella who put a video of his riding on utube :!: |

And Cloggsy has given the other good reason, they know you was in the area cause you told them and then posted a pic with the number plate, how many people have just admitted to a speeding offence without actually seeing the evidence  |

Re: Why hide your Numberplate
When on the road, the chances of someone getting your plate, taking that reg home, doing all the searches etc is fairly rare. Most cases, most drivers won't see a bike plate long enough.
If posted on the tinternet, its easier to find, a few searches and youcould probably find the home address. Especially if you have 2-3 other cars/bikes in the shot at the same address. I.E, my old mans MV, i took the reg off as I don't want to be responsible for someone getting the reg, finding out where he lives, and stealing it. Nothing wrong with doing it and its just an extra caution on the internet. If you don't use caution with what your write/post online, it can bite you in the ass. Trust me !!!!! |
