Failed brake discs

I wonder if any of you can offer any insight as to why my disc has done this?

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1.../Seansdisc.jpg

I rode to Pete and Lissa's yesterday morning, and at the top of their road heard a strange rattling noise. I hadn't heard it before, and I can't think that I did anything to provoke it. I haven't braked hard in the 200 odd miles I've done on the bike. Pete found the problem- a rattly brake disc.

These discs are brand new, have not undergone any hard braking (I've been taking it easy and using engine braking), I just can't see why they've done this.. apart from it being a dodgy disc that got through quality control.

There's loads of movement. The disc sounds like a tin can with a few nails inside it.. On the other disc, one of the rivets is loose too. Suzuki quality control problems?

I'll be calling the place where I got them from tomorrow morning to try and resolve the issue, before naming them- I don't think it can be their fault anyway.

Any ideas anybody?

Edit: They're 97-00 gsxr 600 discs by the way..

Re: Failed brake discs

It's happened to me with GSXR disks before.

What I think happens is if the brake pistons are a little bit crudded up, one side will be stiffer than the other and will move the floating disk to one side, this will wear both the bobbin, carrier and disk until something fails and typically it'll be a wavey washer that fails, then the disk will rattle and even worse will flap round and force the pistons back in the calipers.

Thanks druid. Clean my pistons or possibly new pistons then?

Well it wouldn't hurt to check but mine did this after thousands of miles not 200!

I was just thinking- surely this'd mean that anybody who hasslightly dodgy pistons buggers up their discs?
I'll still give them a ring to see whats what..

Yeah that's what I mean, I suppose if one piston is totally and utterly stuck it may do it sooner but I still wouldn't expect it after 200miles!

I've called about them and two new ones will be on their way shortly. No fuss at all- excellent service from michelle at robinsons foundry :-) she said that they've only had one set do the same as mine, only a couple of months a go- mightve been a bad batch. I'm well pleased :-)
