Balance carbs after fitting FI washers Worth it?
For no.2 son have fitted FI type washer to restrict bike, have read about this decreasing fuel consumption, making them run rich, cough, splutter, run poor etc.etc.
Am trying to think ahead, if it makes the bike run rich/bad, is it worth getting carbs re-balanced to account for the restricted airflow that the washers will have imparted? Seems to be running OK at present, but only doing short runs & washers only been done since Tuesday. 1st real test will be on rideout Saturday, so will see how a 'hobbled' SV goes then. Thoughts, comments, experience would be appreciated. OG.:smt104 |
Re: Balance carbs after fitting FI washers Worth it??
I found with my restrictors in the bike still ran ok but just ran out of life after about 8000rpm, when you try to accelerate it still seemed to pick up at the same sort of rate then just started to splutter after 8000. 90mph was a out the limit before it took about an hour to gain another 5 mph.

If its spluttering or dies on idle just after the washers were fitted it, you might just need to adjust the idle speed. I needed to do that the other week.

Re: Balance carbs after fitting FI washers Worth it?
Carb balancing will have no direct effect on the washer placement at all, although good practise should see you do it after playing with the carbs for any reason, but generally if they were out to begin with then after fitting, they will still be out and likewise if they were correct, they will still be that way.
Mixture on the other hand (rich or lean) could be effected, but most seem to run fine. Cheers Mark. |

I am a strong believer in 'if it aint broke don't fix it', so for now will leave well alone while it seems to be running OK. Thanx Keith |
Re: Balance carbs after fitting FI washers Worth it?
my bike seems to run ok but i also had to up the idle speed because i had a few problems with idiling when i kept dieing in idle, junctions ect. 105 can be one with the restriction altough once past 90 doesnt seem to shift for a while. and i wouldnt recomend that speed. because urmmm it was my brother that did it on my bike lol.
anyway should be ok with the restrictor. chompy |

Washer on carby is same effect as not opening the throttle as far. Balance them by all means as it will do it some good as per usual, but it won't cause the engine to grenade itself if you don't. |
