advicewhen stripping forks?
 

Had my bike in the garage for some work on my forks, as i dont know how to suport the bike. Its a Y plate 650s 22,000 miles.

He changed the oil, and has put to much in, so really hard and to much about 2" / 2.5" of travel, (tie wrap test). Its going back into have this corrected. gret setup for a track were there are no potholes or sunken man hole covers lol

Tho he says i will prob end up having to replace the internals. :(

1. How much travel should i expect ? more than i have i hope
2. How do you all suport the bike when stripping the forks at home?

I wish to take it apart and see for myself.

1) I'd expect to see full movement on the road, as this shot shows of my VFR[1]

2) Supporting the bike is easy even without an ideal setup, couple of BFO blocks of wood under the engine and on the side stand will do not ideal and you have to be a bit careful but it will work.

oh ok the trusted bfo blocks again, ok great ill have a hunt around then for some. ill have ago then,

wow, thats some movement, at the setup at the moment is so hard hit anythink lower/higher then 0.5" bang its like i have scaff poles for springs. But great when out on the lanes at speed.

The VFR is possibly a little extreme, shows more how I ride it than anything else but the idea is that you should *use* your suspension, if you're only using 2inches (out of IIRC 4) then you may as well not have 4 inches of travel, I'd expect in 'normal' use to be using 75-80% or so and occasionally to use all.

Yeah i agree ill let him take out some of the oil and see what comes back then take it from there. i was gonna asy to him i want 3/4 travel

Why would you have to replace the fork internals because a spastic can't RTFM?

My thoughts exactly.

You won't need to strip the forks, you'll only need to remove the top cap, empty the oil out and refill with the right amount.

lol, im going to get him to sort the oil level out, i will do the work myself from now on, and im not going to replace the anything as its not needed. T

he only reason why i didnt do it myself is my and couldnt work out the best way to support the bike and time.

Thanks to a big garage and some lifting slings i have it sorted.

Only internal you might want to replace is the spring. Stock are very soft.
