Running Rich

The exhaust and plugs suggest that the engine in running a little rich, since I changed the exhaust to a fuel slip-on can (bit sooty). I get around 130miles on a tank and it seems to run OK (sounds great), before the exhaust change was getting 120mile per tank.

Various places suggest that if I was to put a K&N filter in it would run leaner (more air).

So do I:

a) Leave it alone, its running all right don't f*** around with it.

b) Stick a better flow air filter in, it'll lean it up a bit. Might be all that's needed.

c) Change the air filter and adjust the idle mixture using a colour tune plug.

d) Re-map the carbs (yes its a curvy) and enter a whole new world of hassle.

Don't care about extra power (cause I won't get any), would just like the fuel mixture to be right and not soot the plugs up (although this hasn't caused any miss fires etc).

Thoughts?

I'd try with a race filter personally (BMC are the recommended ones IIRC), but you could always mess around with the jetting (or leave it alone!)

I have the same thing, bike rides lovely but plugs suggest it's running very rich - slightly less options on the pointy though...

You could start by checking your choke plungers and cables as these stick and cause rich running.

Did that on Saturday, froze my n*** off at least the engine kept my fingers warm :) The running rich started to show signes after changing the can, just haven't got round to doing anything about it. Its due a filter change, so was wondering to go for OEM or 'improve' the flow to reduce the richness (is that a word?).

Wahooo 100 posts :)
