How long were you inside for? If you were inside getting your helmet for a long time, it's probably just because you've got the engine running at about 3krpm with zero airflow over the headers. Otherwise you've got a lean condition on your engine, and run the risk of burning valves. Bad times.

Bikes are known to do this in the dark at idle with the choke on.

Do they get hotter when it's dark? ;)

How long was the engine left idling for? I've had mine happily idling for a good 10 minutes (when I was checking the fan ages ago) and didnt notice the front pipe was glowing hot.

Generally, if its getting hot quick you are either: holding the throttle open at standstill, you've got the choke on so it son a fast idle, or - like neeja said - the engine is running lean (more heat is produced).

What makes oyu think there is a sufficient problem with the carbs that you need to refurbish it with a kit? Had you tried taking them off and cleaning them, then getting it all set up correctly? Its a cheaper option (if you have the capacity to do it for yourself)

In saying that, nothing wrong with preventitive replacing of things if stuff is old :D

Good morning all.

Tight valve clearances can cause exhausts to get excessively hot. When were they last checked?

Cheers.
