Rear sprocket bolts

Just taken the rear sprocket carrier off my XT600 to fit a new sprocket.

The old sprocket was not held on with bolts, its nuts on a double-end threaded rod as shown in the middle of the new sprocket in the photo. The threads are knackered with loctite and a couple of the nuts stripped the threads they were on, so I have decided to replace them all.

Can I just use an ordinary bolt from B&Q or would these need to be a hi-tensile item?

I've found bolt and tab kits for all kinds of off road bikes on Google, but not for an XT600.

Thanks

take bolt to B+Q and match up. If they are the same as SV they should be 8mm threads although they look like they could be 10mm

Thanks! The manual mentions nothing about using blue loctite on them. Do I need to use loctite, or will the specified torque (61nm) be sufficient?

I didn't use loctite on mine and they are still tight after 5 thousand miles but if there's some there you should get some as you'll find other bolts will need it.

Sorry, another question. Do I need to have the un-threaded shoulder on the bolt like this one?

Been up to B&Q and they had shouldered bolts, but all of them were too much shoulder and not enough thread.

Would the bolt not be weaker where it goes through the sprocket if it was threaded at that point. Google searches have bought up a few folk that have suffered sheared sprocket bolts whilst on the move.

What size bolts you after col, i have shed loads of stuff like that, all gained from my previous employer ;)
Id be wary about using cheapo bolts on something like that, b&q are gonna be mild steel at best.
Use loctite anway, what you got to lose, i have some threadlocker if you wanna use some.

That would have been the tensile strength of the bolt i think not the thread .

Shouldered are stronger in shear at a point because there's more metal there... of course if it then transmits the shear to a threaded bit it will make no odds.

Studs will take more tension than same sized bolt going into ally especially. You checked with yam or are they hilariously expensive?

PM carnivore, he has a brace of SRX600s so knows the beast.

Don't use B&Q bolts, and definately don't use a bolt with the thread all the way along - the plain section is in an aluminium hole and the running torque presses this against the side of the hole, threads will gall the side of the hole and oval them.

OK, thanks everyone.
