sprocket carrier bearing
 

Hi, Im trying to replace my sprocket carrier bearing but the old one doesnt want to budge.. It seems there is an outer seal seperate to the bearing (there is a spcare between a seal and bearing in there? Do i pop the seal out, hammer out bearing then replace new bearing then push that seal back on?

Good afternoon.


Pry out the seal & make sure there isn't a circlip retaining the bearing. If there is, remove it or you'll end up breaking the hub.

If the bearing still refuses to move, use a little heat form a blow lamp on the hub to expand it slightly.
I always heat wheels & sprocket hubs when installing new bearings, & grease the outside of the new bearing before installing it.
Yes you can re-use the old seal.

There is a metal ring under the rubber seal which is now a bit bent from trying to pry out ( to no success). No good?

That'll be the circlip then! You'll have to press the old bearing into the hub to release pressure on the circlip before it'll come out. Use heat again.

Once you have the circlip out, you can most likely straighten it out using a hammer on a flat surface.

Next question.. the wheel bearings.. should they be flush with the rim ? as i am able to push them further in..?

Fit the bearing on the sprocket side first, & tap in gently in using the heat & grease technique. Install the cental spacer, & tap the brake side bearing in until it's just touching the central spacer. Insert the wheel spindle, & remove it. The central spacer should have a minute amount of lateral movement, If it's flopping about like a C@ck in a 'Top Hat' tap the bearing in a little more.

The best bearing inserting tool is one of your old bearings with its outer circumference ground down so it doesn't stick inside the wheel.
Tap only on the outside edge of it, & not in the centre.
