Coils; Curvy/Pointy.

Flicking through the August 2010 issue of Performance Bikes I notice that they have a 1999 SV650 track bike of sorts. The writer is doing some mods to the engine and the steering and listing what he'd sourced from eBay, but what got me was:

and a pair of more robust K3-on coils (£10).
Now I didn't know that there was a problem with the pre-K3 coils? Is there some sort of performance gain to be had? Have the price of second hand eBay coils just shot up?

Nor did I, I'm sure that someone will soon be in here to say that they've had a Curvy coil failure, but I don't think it's more common on Curvies than other bikes. As a further note the only SV I've personally ever needed to fit a new coil to is a Pointy.

No, and possibly 'cos there's always some people who'll believe anything they read*

*Oh the irony!

Think I've got a coil breaking down so I assume this mean I can fit a pointy coil on my curvy.

I think hole centers might be different.

So for complete ease of changing I should stick to a curvy ones then as I'm lazy.;) Thanks Chris.http://forums.sv650.org/images/icons/icon14.gif

Yes, they are not even close. Pointy coils are smaller.
Never heard of problem with them.

Are the curvy coils more prone to failure?

No they are pretty good.
