How do you remove the (front) caliper carrier?

How do you remove the front caliper carrier (no. 7 in the pic below)?

Shouldn't it just slide off and if so, any tips other than brute force and ignorance to remove one that's stuck solid?

it'll be wedged into a hole full of dry white dusty crud most likely. I've found that a good dose of penetrating fluid allowed to stand for a cuppa and biscuit usually does enough to allow you to waggle it loose.

Be patient, it will come.

Cheers Mike!

Sorted...place in vice, hit with hammer and block of wood.

If you are using penetrating fluid, might be a good idea to have a new set of boots to hand.

I know paraffin does make the boots swell up :D

We just did the same with Squirrells brakes as they've been stood for so long.

Clamp in the vice and 'tease out' with a precision instrument

OK so now the calipers have been refurb'd, what grease do I use in the boots (no.6 in the diagram above) to try and help prevent the white carp stuff sticking them solid again?

Normal bog standard grease
Red rubber grease
Some non-specific white (lithium) grease my lad uses for his skateboard bearings
Other

Red Rubber is what I'm planning to do mine with!

Rubber grease or generic silicone based grease will not attack the rubber boots, mineral based greases likely will.

CV with molly is also a good alternative for the sliders as its designed not to attack rubber.
