Brake caliper question.
http://desmond.yfrog.com/Himg614/sca...=640&ysize=640
In the process of changing the piston seals, behind both of the dust seals there is epic amounts of this white stuff, im not at all suprised they are sticking, and may have to consider doing the other caliper too if this one is like this.... |
Re: Is this normal?
well it's normal for calipers that haven't been serviced in some time yes.
|
Re: Is this normal?
thats alright, new seals are in now, its bled, brakes feel a shed load better! they like go off when you release the brake lever and everything. Thats probably the first time they have been touched in 8 years.
Bit of fluid around the bottom of the caliper, but i'm hoping that might just be a bit of excess from putting them in, as the pistons and seals were swimming in brake fluid. I shall check in the morning to see if theres more |

Re: Is this normal?
its not humour actually, I wasn't aware they got into this sort of shape over use, I changed all 4 seals on one caliper as it was sticking, the other one is fine atm. I reckon I probably will change all the seals in the other and the rear quite soon. I was descusted at the state of it

Re: Is this normal?
You should feel a lot better now you been de-custed :) :)

Re: Is this normal?
Fair do's. The other one won't be far away from the same state though. No point in doing one side and not the other if you want nice brakes. It's a bit like having half a w*nk. :D

Re: Is this normal?
yeah I know what you mean, the difference is like night and day even changing one. Id say I will change it fairly soon definately. Now that ive done it once it will be much easier. I was going to get someone to do it for me but thought meh, Im good enough at this stuff ill have a go at it.

Re: Is this normal?
Just to check, did you clean the caliper or just replace the seals?
|
Re: Is this normal?
cleaned them up to as clean as a 8 year old caliper would go. Took a lot of scraping and tooth brush rubbing lol. Replaced with brand new seals, coated in brake fluid before they went in, made sure they were sitting correctly, pistons cleaned untill near chrome, slotted them in, cleaned and re-greased the slides. Hopefully ive done alright :)
