Do removable baffles affect economy?
this has been bugging me for a week or so now - but does a baffle affect the fuel economy of a bike? I swapped my curvy for a pointy 03 plate (only 4.5k on the clock) and the difference in mileage per tank is a little concerning - about 115 on the curvy to 88 on the pointy. Only difference is the baffle really as i'm guessing the alarm won't take up any petrol.
Cheers in advance :) |
Re: Baffles....
Caveat: I know nowt about pointies & precious little about curvies.
Isn't there a temp sensor which if not registering defaults the mixture to rich? |
Re: Baffles....
If anything I would have assumed the pointy being more economical. You've got issues I'd suggest. A free flowing exhaust isn't going to make dramatic differences on fuel consumption.

Re: Baffles....
Should not make much difference.
Check the plugs and see if it is overfuelling, has the air filter got a dead cat in it or something, is the TPS and balance set OK? (they aren't from new!) |
Re: Baffles....
88 miles per tank, mr rossi i sugest you get a mechanic to have a look at it.

Re: Baffles....
i wouldn't mind if its been sat for ages but its just had a service prior to the garage selling it to me. I don't ride it any differently to the other bike either - i'll have a word with the garage see what they can do.
Cheers for the help, greatly appreciated |
Re: Baffles....
That is certainly not the norm, so dont let em tell you it is. You should be seing 110 befor light comes on even with a heavy hand. As above its prob an easily fixed prob such as filter or sensor. Good luck!

Do you really think the garage did anything more than clean it before selling it to you? They might have changed the oil so it looked nice and clean in the sight glass but do not assume they did anything like a proper service. Filters cannot be seen and you cannot tell if the throttle bodies have been properly balanced so they will often be left. Complain to the dealer by all means but it's VERY easy to do these yourself, and then you'll really know. |
Re: Baffles....
I have to say that I was shocked with the tank range on the thou, but I think that may be down to less than perfect servicing on the previous owners behalf. It does feel very sluggish & drinks more than Gazza on the binge. I'm getting about 90 miles to a tankful, the curvy gets around 150-160 miles per tankful.

Re: Baffles....
shocking mileage to the tank mate-115 on the curvy?-my light fuel light started flashing last night at 137 and i've not been hanging around, 88 on a pointy would suggest something needs looked at-either its the bike or your ripping it up through every gear
