you could possibly use the existing 650 axle by replacing the bearings in the 1000 wheel/sprocket carrier.

Is there enough room further forward for the wider tyre profile? Can the 650 caliper bracket be made to work with the new wheel?

Dave, time to get the verniers out.

Be similar work to doing a gsxr600/750 rear wheel conversion.
As I think the SV thou rear wheel is from a k1-2 GSXR (with different bearings), can someone confirm that?

Like I say, probably but not certainly a massive PITA.
Investigate chain offset, compare that to amount that can be machined off sprocket carrier and see if it is possible. I doubt it.

If you want 180/5.5 rear then zoran sells a nice kit to use K6> GSXR wheel very easily.

SV1000 wheel is same as older gsxr (01-03). It is to wide for 650. Rotor side is problem.
It is doable ( I did couple of them) but needs machining and new caliper hanger.

can this be done by fitting a sv1000 swingarm?

I don't think throwing will be good enough, it probably won't stick.

I suspect some bolts or similar will be required.

Next Question: can I throw a perfectly good SV650 down the runway at Leeming? ;)
