Removing the trunk from the air filter

Hello all, I read on here about removing the trunk from the front end of the air filter box, i have and the noise is so much louder, it's as if i can hear the cylinders fighting right under my head, MY question, Why is it so much louder and are there any other side effects from taking it off?

Because you've removed the silencer from it, that's what the 'snorkel', as it's commonly referred to, is.

On an otherwise standard bike, not significant ones, no.

It also allows water to get into the airbox in heavy rain, doesnt it?

I did the same, however I jacked the tank up by half an inch to get a bit more airflow, and that really allows the induction noise out

Check out Chewy's stuff
http://www.chewys-stuff.co.uk/tank_s...nk_spacers.htm

I found that the bike would occasionally 'cough' or 'burp' when closing the throttle rapidly, like you do around town, especially when the revs were a bit high (say 8k+). Whilst some of these could be amusing, some were quite violent, so you need to be a bit careful

The 'snorkle' from the SV1000 is twice the size as the SV650, ie. 4 channels as opposed to 2, so I've put one of these in for winter - I was concerned that with the tank raised & the snorkle out, the air filter is exposed to rain/water/crap, and might give rise to trouble.
I found a dog end sitting on the filter at one stage  , although in hindsight I'm not sure if it was sucked in, or carefully placed there by some joker in Frith Street

You shouldn't need to get the ignition re-mapped, but it's probably worth doing so if you've got other additions like end cans, etc
I'm going to do this when the weather gets a bit better

Is this, in your opinion, as a result of the tank spacer, or the SV1000 snorkel? I would like more induction noise, but am not keen on the side effects you describe above!

It's not the 1000 snorkle - it's pretty much behaved itself since this was put in 8)
It only coughed with it out, and the tank raised.

The snorkle(s) are rubber, and they're push fit, so you can easily pop it out, go for a spin, and then put it back in if you don't like it.

Tank is easy to remove/raise. Undo the 2 bolts, and simply lift as the tank is hinged, then use the tank prop that should be under the pillion seat to hold it up.
