weird ignition problem

ok ok .. you guys have seen ive been havin problems with the sv650.. today i had to start the sv by constantly pushing hitting the ignition switch click/click/click/click then it would finally cut on ..

today at the gas station..after i filled up.. i would hit the ignition click / click /click...click... and then it just kept rolling the engine over... i even took the keys out and the ignition kept rolling over and over and over by itself without me pushing anything..sounded like it may have been firing on one cylinder.... then i hit the ignition one more time..click..and it fired right up....

drove it home...and now she wont start at all ... i hit the ignition..and it sounded like she wanted to roll / click / click /click.. still nothing.. i check the battery out with a voltmeter and she is good to go....

we also took a hammer to the starter gave it a few clunks...

i check all the fuses i could think of.. but now its nothing but click click click... click click click x 20 ...

this is where it is coming from... ill post pics in a minute

If it carried on after taking the keys out i am sure it can only be the starter relay or the starter motor solenoid.

Re: weird ignition problem

I have seen Bandits that have got water under the plug on the starter solenoid causing similar problems.
Remove the plug, check for any water/corrosion, clean everything up, and try it at that.
If the solenoid still clicks, and the starter doesn't turn, it could be a low battery caused by the corrosion crossing connections and draining power.
Hope this is some use to you.

Take off and clean all the battery and solenoid connections, put them back together with a covering of petroleum jelly, its called vaseline over here, which should slow any corrosion and oxidising. Once you've done that give it a try, it would be worth givng the solenoid a shake while its out as well, not too violent mind !!

If that doesn't work check your battery again, try to jump start it from another one, car or bike and see if that works.

It should be either your battery or solenoid though, if the jump start works it'll more than likely be the battery thats kaput but with it sticking and 'fluttering' it sounds as if there's enough power in the battery to pull the relay in but not enough to spin the starter motor.

have a nice day.

That is the starter solenoid and a suspect from your symptoms.

Has it got water in it?

im gonna try this right now..hope it works... is there a way i can actually look inside the starter..i know i can disconnect it..but can i get further than that?
we call it vaseline too... hence flies in the vasoline by the stone temple pilots
