Default Horn not working.

Hi all,

My MOT is due in two weeks and the horn on my curvy has died. It was working yesterday before I rode home from work, but wasn't when I got home. I tried it again today and it still wasn't working so I tried changing the horn for a new one....still nothing. I tried with 3 different brand new horns but was getting nothing at all. Any one got any ideas how to fix this asap???? If its the wiring is it possible to replace just the part that wires into the horn or will I need a whole new loom for the bike???

Thanks

No no no.... never replace a loom ... just carve it up and replace the rotten bit's untill you get that annoyed with it you rewire the lot, that's what happened to mine anyway!

Right then wiring 101... #searches for wiring diagram... only got 10 or so copies...#

The horn is fed from the signal fuse, it gets a direct feed from the loom, so firstly check the orange/green wire that leads to the horn. Does it have voltage? It should have voltage any time the ignition is on.

The next is the earth, which is a switched earth for some reason. Follow the black/blue wire up to the connector for the LHS switchgear, it should have continuity.

Then, the switch itself, short out the black/blue wire and the black/white wire on the LOOM side of that connector, it should sound the horn when the ignition is on. If it does, then it's the horn button at fault.

Then it flows to earth via the black/white wire, this should have continuity to earth.

Have you tried the fuse? you dont mention that. If that is ok try swapping the relay, you dont need to change the whole loom if it is a broken wire just join it with solder, but find out first why it happened to prevent it happening again, for instance is it rubbing or caught round something.

If it was the fuse then the indicators and sidelights wouldn't work either.

There is no horn relay on the SV as standard.

I'm betting that when you take the switchgear connector out you'll get a handful of green fuzz.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Will check all fuses anyway (just in case!) and I'll take switchgear off and give it a clean. If that don't work I'll check that there's current etc in wires.....failing that, looks like i'll be getting the wire cutters out!?!

Thanks again

Is your speedo light/neutral light working?? If its isnt its likely to be the fuse as these use the same fuse as the horn.

I don't know if it's a common problem on the SV but mine had a chaffed wire just under the tank. It had worn almost all the way through the wire and was just held together by a little bit of insulation so the horn worked intermitently and then only when the bars were turned to the right and then not at all
