Default Speedo Problems

I've had my SK3 SV650S for about a month now after passing my test, every was good and she's brill, I took my misses out on it last night and got back late, I didn't cover her up as I was out early this morning for work.

This morning I took her for the normal commute to work of about 12 miles however I noticed the speedo went skitz, registering between 7-38mph when doing about 40mph, then I went on the dual carriageway and it was registering between 0-7mph when I was doing approx 75mph then got stuck at 0mph then reverted to the 0-7mph again.

Is there a connection that may have come loose? Or has something broken?

Also would this be an easy fix or a garage job do you think.

Cheers guys.

Speedo is pretty simple device, it'll either be a loose wire, corroded contact or the rotor will have been munched.

That happened with mine back in October in the rain. Next day it was working again.

It went again permanantly around Nov/Dec and it was the rotor that had gone. All the lugs had snapped. Simple enough to replace.

First and easiest, check the battery connections are tight, that could cause this and you can fix it in 2 minutes. I had this issue twice, once it was that and once it was a faulty starter relay, the relay kept getting worse and eventually killed all the power rather than just giving a wobbly supply.

Real mechanics always look for the most likely cause, me, I always look for the simplest thing to fix

Cool, I'll check this, however its only the speed that is that has the issue the clock, lights and starting are all good and when it's stopped it does stay at 0mph.

Its outside work baking in the sun (well as much as it can this time of year) so if its water related it should be dried out for home time when I think a can a WD40 might be a good idea along with the checks you guys have come up with.

Cheers.

I have the same issue - mines a pointy (ooher!) and I noticed the speedo going bonkers on the way home last night, speeds randomy going from 186 to 0 and is the same when stationary, I clocked up 50 miles last night on a 25 mile commute! - all the electrics are fine (lights/indies/hazards/horn/heated grips/starter). Gonna have to wait until my day off on tuesday to lift the tank up and check the wiring - any advice on the most likely place to look for??

Have the same problem with mine from time to time because i use mine to commute and cant stop it getting wet while im at work. I usually lift the tank and spray the wiring with WD40 to drive the moisture out and that seems to do the trick but the last week my temp gauge has been going nuts aswell telling me the temp is high when i've just started the bike.

My money would be on the rotor - symptoms are the same as I had. 20 odd quid from a Suzuki stealer and you're sorted.
