Still pondering on my fuelling problem. A long while ago I fitted the 4deg woodruff key. If that has broken, could the timing slip or, does the interference fit on the tapered shaft prevent it from moving?

In theory a woodruff key is simply a location device and does not have any load bearing responsibility. The taper fit should be all that is required to transmit a drive force. Think of the Morse tapers used for drills, milling machines lathes etc.
That said, I have in the past snapped woodruff keys but always because some cack handed so called mechanic has not tightened up pulleys etc properly.

Yes it could snap but only if the actual rotor bolt wasn't tight when the engines been turned over.
As timwilky said it shouldn't be able to move. If it had shifted, I'd expect it to shift so far that it wouldn't run full stop.

If the key was damaged enough to allow the rotor to move relative to the crank then the bolt would have to be loose and the rotor detached from the taper - I'd be surprised if it ran at all.
As Tim rightly says the key is only there to locate the rotor when fitting it - it plays no part in driving the rotor once correctly fitted.

It's a tiny sliver of metal (No 8 in the diagram) that precisely locates the generator to the crankshaft. As I understand it.
